Solid Start for Alexandrova
It might not have been a spectacular beginning to the season but as far as getting into the rhythm of things is concerned, especially following a roller-coaster of a season, Alexandrova looks to have started well.
She started off with a third round appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open where the Russian lost to Elina Svitolina and her trip to Melbourne was punctuated with back to back victories over Iga Swiatek and Simona Halep at the Gippsland Trophy. She went down in the semifinal of that tournament to a resurgent Kaia Kanepi.
At the Australian Open, Alexandrova made a solid start with straight set wins over Martina Trevisan and Barbora Krejcikova, before Ash Barty took care of her in the third.
Now a top seed, with rhythm and reasonable for under her belt, Alexandrova will know this is a good chance to add to her four WTA titles. She starts off with an opening round fixture against a Danish qualifier who is all of 18 years of age.

Tauson in Maiden WTA Match of the Season
Tauson hasn’t been around for too long, not that you expect someone who is only 18 to have played a lot of top level tennis but there are already signs we could be looking at a top 50 player – if not better – very soon.
Her ITF career has already seen her grab nine titles since 2017 which includes two titles in the short period for which this season has been on. After losing in the first round of the qualifiers at the Australian Open, Tauson has won titles at the Fujairah and Altenkirchen ITF tournaments, improving to her career-best ranking of 139th in the world.
And starting out in the qualifying rounds yet again here in Lyon, this time around Tauson made it through to the main draw of the tournament with wins over Juline Fayard and Amandine Hesse.
An in-form Alexandrova will pose a much stronger challenge to Tauson but the Danish player has shown she is ready to break into the big leagues. Will this be that tournament?
