Zavatska Looking to Make a Mark

World No. 124 Katarina Zavatska of Ukraine, who made the main draw of the French Open and U.S. Open for the first time in 2020, will be playing in her first WTA main draw match of the season on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old right-hander featured in the Australian Open qualifiers in January, winning her first round against Denmark’s Clara Tauson, but falling to India’s Ankita Raina in the next.

Next, the Ukrainian featured in an ITF event in France, reaching the quarterfinals, before falling to Harmony Tan of France in straight sets.

A six-time champion on the ITF Circuit, Zavatska’s best performance on the Tour came in Tashkent in 2019, when she reached the semifinals, defeating Jelena Ostapenko en route. She was beaten by Romani’s Sorona Cirstea in the final four stage.

Having made her WTA main draw debut in Kuala Lumpur in 2017, Zavatska delivered her first significant performance in Rabat in 2018, reaching the quarterfinals, before losing to Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei.

She is yet to break into the top 100, having reached a career-high ranking of 103 last year.

Gasparyan Looking For First Main Draw Win of the Year

Facing Zavatska in the first round will be Russia qualifier Margarita Gasparyan, who is 0-2 this year, losing in the first rounds of the Gippsland Trophy and the Australian Open.

Ranked 131st in the world, Gasparyan, who defeated France’s Chloe Pacquet in straight sets in the first round of qualifying last week, bounced back from a set down to beat fellow Russian Kamilla Rakhimova in the next round and qualified for the main draw in Lyon.

Gasparyan began the season at the Australian Open qualifiers, winning her first two rounds, but losing the third to Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova. She did enter the main draw of the Melbourne major as a lucky loser but was blown away by 14th seed Garbine Muguruza in the first round.

The 26-year-old right-hander, who reached a career-high ranking of 41 in 2016, won the Baku Cup in 2015 and the Tashkent Open in 2018. She also has nine singles titles at the ITF level.

Zavatska v Gasparyan Prediction and Tip

Given Gasparyan’s experience, she should be the favourite to win this contest. Also, she is a better player on hard courts than Zavatska, who is a solid on clay.

Tip: Gasparyan to win: 1/2 (bet365)
