Viktorija Golubic v Vera Lapko Head to Head

They have met just once before, in the first round of the U.S. Open in 2020, with Lapko fighting back from a set down to win 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.

Golubic Brings Good ITF Form to Lyon

World No. 130 Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland comes into the tournament, having won both of her qualifying rounds in style.

In the first round, the Swiss defeated Romania’s Laura Paar 6-1, 6-1, while in the next, she ousted compatriot Leonie Kung 6-3, 6-0.

Having failed to qualify for the Australian Open, Golubic has been pretty successful at the ITF Circuit this year, finishing runner-up to Denmark’s Clara Tauson in UAE in January, and winning the title in France by beating Belgian Maryinna Zanevska in February. She also reached the semifinal of an ITF event the following week in Germany.

A former World No. 51, Golubic won the Swiss Open title in 2016 by beating Kiki Bertens in the final. She also reached the Linz Open final that year but finished runner-up to Dominika Cibulkova.

Since the successful 2016 season, she has struggled with form and consistency and seen a decline in her rankings. She did reach the third round of Wimbledon in 2019, by beating Iga Swiatek and Yulia Putintseva in the first two rounds, but lost to Dayana Yastremska in the Round of 32.

The 28-year-old right-hander has won nine singles titles at the ITF Circuit.

Lapko Looking To Get Back Her 2018 Form

On Tuesday, Golubic will face Belarus’ Vera Lapko, who is ranked 280th in the world.

The 22-year-old is 1-1 in singles this year, having featured in just the Yarra Valley Classic, where she won her first round match against Kazakhstan’s Yeroshlava Shvedova, but fell to seventh seed Petra Martic in the Round of 32.

The 2016 Australian Open girls’ singles winner, Lapko reached a career-high ranking of 60 in 2018 after she entered the semifinals in Lugano and quarterfinals in Guangzhou, Tashkent and Luxembourg.

The 6’0” right-hander who has been playing more doubles matches recently has won six singles titles at the ITF level. She has reached the second round of the majors on three occasions, at Wimbledon in 2018 and the U.S. Open in 2018 and 2020 (when she beat Golubic in the first round).

Golubic v Lapko Prediction and Tip

Golubic has been in great form at the ITF level, while Lapko has played more doubles than singles this year, so the former will be in good rhythm and should win this contest in straight sets.

Tip: Golubic to win in straight sets: 4/7 (bet365)
