Camila Giorgi v Clara Tauson Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 26-year-old Italian and the Danish teenager.

Giorgi Started Slowly in Second-Round Victory

Giorgi has won two WTA titles and was a semi-finalist in Palermo last August.

And, after defeating Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovakia in straight sets in the first round, she had to draw on all that experience during Thursday’s match with Nina Stojanovic of Serbia.

The Italian dropped her serve three times in the opening set, and, although she got one of them back, could not stop Stojanovic from taking the set. However, she picked up in the second, and this time she prevailed 3 -1 in terms of service breaks.

The third developed into a tense battle, and at 6 – 5 down on her own serve, Giorgi faced two match points. She saved them both, however, and forced the tie-break, which she eventually won with her own second match point.

Tauson Knocks Out Top Seed

Although only 18, Tauson, winner of the girls’ singles at the Australian Open in 2019 and a former junior number one, is already starting to make a name for herself on the senior tour, and with her aggressive style is being described as the successor to another Danish champion, Caroline Wozniacki.

Certainly, she is no respecter of reputations as she showed in the French Open last year when she knocked out Jennifer Brady in the first round,

And she underlined that here, where after coming through qualifying, she faced the top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, and beat her in straight sets.

In the second round she played the Hungarian doubles’ specialist Timea Babos, and, although she began badly by dropping her opening service game, roared back with three breaks of her own to take the first set.

The pair swapped breaks in the second set, but then Tauson broke the Hungarian serve again, and served out from there.

Giorgi v Tauson Prediction & Tip

Although Giorgi might have the edge in terms of experience at this level, Tauson has proved to be fearless so far this week. She has everything to gain and very little to lose in this match, so may even be favourite to continue her fairy tale run.

Tip: Tauson to win in straight sets: 3/1 (Sign up here with bet365 to get excellent odds!)
