Greet Minnen vs Viktorija Golubic Head to Head

The two players have never met before on the WTA Tour.

Minnen, in with Her Best Run of the Season

Greet Minnen has delivered one of the best performances of her career in Lyon by reaching the quarterfinal. She did so in great style by beating the number 8 seed Arantxa Rus 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the second round.

That marathon match went on for a little over two hours and saw the young Belgian hold her own against the experienced Rus. It may not have been the cleanest of the wins but she got the job done. In the opening round here in Lyon, Minnen defeated Katarzyna Kawa in straight sets to kickstart her journey.

The 23-year-old had a rather eventful Australian Open Series by her standards. While she fell in the second round in the Yarra Valley Classic and the Phillip Island Trophy, she did win a few games in the Melbourne Slam albeit, as a qualifier. Minnen won her three qualifying games to reach the main draw where she lost to Petra Kvitova in the first round.

Nonetheless, these results are significantly better than her entirety of the season last year where she mainly lost in the early rounds or opening matches. The fact that she is getting a few wins under her belt now only means that she is improving as a player and will likely get better with time.

Golubic, Delivering a Big Upset

Viktorija Golubic has delivered what is undoubtedly one of the biggest upsets in the Lyon Open this season. In the second round, she met the number 3 seed and Lyon-born local favourite Caroline Garcia, whom she defeated 6-1, 6-2.

The 28-year-old Swiss just needed an hour to dispatch Garcia in what proved to be one of her best performances in recent times. With a first-service win rate of 86.8% and five break points, Golubic reached her first quarterfinal on the WTA Tour since the 2019 WTA Guangzhou.

In the first round here, she defeated Vera Lapko in three sets after reaching the main draw as a qualifier.

Interestingly, the Swiss arrived in Lyon on the back of some terrific momentum. She spent a good couple of weeks on the ITF circuit playing the $25,000 event in France and Germany. In the first case, she won the title after beating Maryna Zanevska in the final while in the latter, she reached the semifinal.

Golubic had a similar run in the ITF UAE too earlier this year where she was the runner-up. As for her performance on the WTA circuit, she hasn’t been this clinical recently.

Minnen vs Golubic Prediction & Tip

This is an evenly matched fixture that can very well go either way. It wouldn’t be surprising if this proves to be a long, dragged-out affair.
