Badosa Edges Past Mladenovic

Seventh seed Paula Badosa edged out fourth seed Kristina Mladenovic of France in a rollercoaster quarterfinal on Friday.

After a two-hour-and-36-minute contest that swung from one end to the other, Badosa finally emerged victorious with a 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 win.

The Spaniard had saved two set points before claiming the first set. She also saved two set points in the next set, but couldn’t finish off the match as Mladenovic hung on to win in the tie-break. Badosa, however, took control of the third set to close out the match and reach her third-ever WTA semifinal.

In all, Badosa saved 12 of 18 break points and converted 9 of 12 in the quarterfinal.

The 23-year-old, who reached the semifinals in Palermo in 2019 and in Istanbul last year, has been in good form over the last one year, which also saw her reach the Round of 16 in her main draw debut at the French Open last year.

At the Lyon Open, the 2015 French Open girl’s champion began with a 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5) win over France’s Harmony Tan in the Round of 32, before beating Switzerland’s Stefanie Vogele 6-2, 6-4 in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

Friday’s win over Mladenovic improved the Spaniard to 5-2 this year. She will be aiming to reach her first WTA final on Saturday.

Tauson’s Stunning Run Continues

Clara Tauson’s stunning run at the WTA Lyon Open continued as she demolished Italy’s Camila Giorgi 6-3, 6-1 on Friday to enter her first WTA semifinal.

The 18-year-old won 81.5% of her first serve points and converted five of 13 break points. She faced just one break point in the entire match, which she failed to save.

The Dane also served six aces and made just one double fault compared to her opponent’s eight, to close out the contest in an hour and 10 minutes and clinch her ninth win in a row.

Ranked 139th in the world, Tauson came into the tournament on the back of four consecutive wins, which saw her lift the Altenkirchen ITF W25 title last month.

The former junior No. 1, who won the Australian Open girls’ title in 2019, qualified for the main draw in Lyon after beating a couple of Frenchwomen, Juline Fayard and Amandine Hesse, in straight sets in the two qualifying rounds.

She pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament by beating top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 32 and took the momentum into her Round-of-16 match against Timea Babos, as she knocked out the Hungarian with a 6-2, 6-3 win.

The right-handed Dane, who beat Jennifer Brady in the first round of the French Open last year, is yet to drop a set in the tournament, and has a 17-3 overall record in 2021.

Badosa v Tauson Prediction and Tip

Both players will be fired-up to reach a first final and that makes this contest really exciting. Tauson’s current form and her ability to cause upsets give her a slight edge over her opponent. Also, the Dane has barely been troubled in the tournament; such has been her dominance. On the other hand, two of Badosa’s three matches in the tournament have gone the distance.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
