David Goffin v Filip Krajinovic Head to Head

David Goffin brings a narrow lead in the series, 3-2 after winning their most recent matchup at the 2020 US Open in straight sets. Before that, it was Krajinovic who had won the last two meetings to level the head-to-head, on the indoors of Montpellier and the outdoor hardcourts of Indian Wells respectively, both in 2019.

Goffin Wins Montpellier, but Loses in Rotterdam

David Goffin’s long wait for a title win came to an end at last week’s Open Sud de France in Montpellier. It was a triumph that banished the painful memories of squandering match points in an Australian Open shocker last month. His first round defeat to Alexei Popyrin in Melbourne was the earliest he had lost at the Australian Open in eight years.

But Goffin bounced back emphatically in south of France, winning his first title since 2017. He had to do it the hard way, with his resilience and discipline coming to the fore multiple times throughout the week.

The Belgian faced a treacherous path to the final, coming from a set down in his opening match against an in-form Benjamin Bonzi. Then he beat a rampaging improving Lorenzo Sonego and Ego Gerasimov to make the finals.

He played his best match of the week in beating Bautista Agut in the championship match, winning 91 total points in the match to secure a three-set victory. However, the 30-year-old only managed a second round showing in Rotterdam this week as he fell to a surprise straight sets defeat to France’s Jeremy Chardy.

Goffin is on an upward trajectory again and if he can keep up his level, with the European clay-court season on the horizon, there is a realistic chance of breaking the top 10 for the second time in his career.

Krajinovic Returns after Nearly a Month Out

Filip Krajinovic is among the best active players to have never won an ATP title in his career. He is 0-3 in championship matches, and only trails to Felix Auger-Aliassime’s jaw-dropping 0-7 record and Aljaz Bedene who has lost four finals.

If Krajinovic was hopeful of making an imprint, then an ATP 250 provides fresh impetus to the cause. However, the capacity to self-immolate, and the hard luck of injuries has always been detrimental for his progress. Krajinovic’s stop-start career has been a sorry mess at times, and you wonder whether he has played to his potential.

The 29-year-old Serbian has played in two official tournaments in 2021, three if you include the exhibition in Adelaide in which he played one set against Jannik Sinner before he was substituted by fellow countryman Novak Djokovic at the start of the second set.

His campaign shifted to Melbourne where he won a doubles match teaming up with Djokovic at the ATP Cup, but Serbia failed in their title defense as they eliminated in the group stages. Krajinovic performed admirably at year’s first Grand Slam. He equaled his best achievement Down Under in reaching the third round where he fought back from two sets before losing to eventual finalist Daniil Medvdev in five sets.

Goffin v Krajinovic Prediction and Tip

Goffin starts as a huge favorite here and rightly so. The title win in Montpellier was immense for his confidence and motivation, something he admitted he lacked in recent months. Expect him to sail past the returning Krajinovic.

Tip: Goffin to win: 3/5 (bet365)
