Aryna Sabalenka v Alize Cornet Head to Head

World No. 59 Cornet won their only previous matchup in Rome in 2019, winning the Round-of-64 contest 6-1, 6-4.

Sabalenka Looking To Start Well

World No. 8 Aryna Sabalenka will begin her quest for a 10th WTA title at the WTA Dubai Championships in the Round of 32.

The third seed Belarusian, who received a first-round bye, began the year in top form, racing to a third consecutive title in the season-opener in Abu Dhabi.

However, she has lost the winning touch since then, exiting the Gippsland Trophy without winning a match, falling to Serena Williams in a tough fourth-round contest at the Australian Open and losing to Garbine Muguruza in her first match in Doha since winning the title last year.

But both her Australian Open and Qatar Open losses were very close affairs against exceptionally good players, so she isn’t exactly out of form, but those losses have broken her momentum of making winning runs to titles.

The 22-year-old, who won back-to-back titles in Ostrava and Linz to close out 2020, began the 2021 season with title success in Abu Dhabi, where she ousted Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova in what was the Belarusian’s 13th WTA final.

However, her unbeaten run of 15 matches came to an end at the Gippsland Trophy, where she lost to Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi in the second round after getting a first-round bye.

A nine-time winner on the tour, the aggressive right-hander, who is 9-3 this year, will be hoping to start well in Dubai and make another deep run in the tournament.

Last year, she was seeded seventh in Dubai and won her first two rounds against Maria Sakkari and Elise Mertens respectively. She was, however, beaten by eventual champion Simona Halep in the quarterfinal.

Cornet Passes Kasatkina Test

Facing Sabalenka on Tuesday will be France’s Alize Cornet, who defeated Phillip Island Trophy winner Daria Kasatkina in the first round on Sunday.

The 31-year-old Frenchwoman, who came into the tournament with a 3-5 record, needed just over two hours to beat the 23-year-old Russian 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

A six-time winner on the WTA Tour, Cornet had just two double faults against Kasatkina’s 10 in the match. The Frenchwoman was however broken six times in the match, but she fared better when facing Kasatkina’s serve, converting eight of 14 break point chances.

Beginning the season in Abu Dhabi, Cornet won her first-round match against Greece’s Velentini Grammatikopoulou, but fell in the next round to Paula Badosa.

At the Gippsland Trophy, she fought back from a set down to win her first round against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, but once again failed to go past the next round after she went down to Naomi Osaka.

Next up was the Australian Open, where she began with a win over Russia’s Valeria Savinykh, but yet again failed to win two in a row, falling to Ann Li of the U.S. in the next round.

Her last two tournaments, the Phillip Island Trophy and the Lyon Open, saw Cornet make first-round exits after being beaten by Australia’s Kimerley Birrell and Clara Burel respectively.

A 13-time WTA finalist, Cornet reached the final in Dubai in 2014 by beating Serena Williams in the semifinal, but was outplayed by Venus Williams in a one-sided final.

The World No. 58, who first won a title in Budapest in 2008, won her sixth in Gstaad in 2018.

Sabalenka v Cornet Prediction and Tip

Although Cornet won their only matchup, Sabalenka’s current form gives her an edge over the Frenchwoman. Expect the Belarusian to start well and make a deep run in the tournament.

Tip: Sabalenka to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
