Vondrousova Goes Past Bogdan

While the former French Open runnerup was a straight-set winner over Ana Bogdan in her first round match, it wasn’t the most straightforward of victories, especially in the first set of the encounter.

Vondrousova got the early break of serve in the first set but Bogdan came back to level the proceedings at 3-3. A further exchange of breaks took them to to 4-4 before Vondrousova broke Bogdan one more time to take a 5-4 lead and then serve out the set.

Much like the opening set, Vondrousova began the second with a break of serve and then saw that lead evaporate when Bogdan broke back in the fourth. The very next game, however, led to Vondrousova forcing her opponent to drop serve yet again and proceeded to hold on to her own till the end of the encounter.

The Czech is coming off a good run too, having made the semifinal at the Yarra Valley Classic in the lead-up to the Australian Open before entering the fourth round at the season’s first major. Can she now come out a winner against a player who is all of 16 years of age but already become a household name in the world of tennis.

Gauff Stumbles But Comes Through

While it was never meant to be an easy first round encounter against Ekaterina Alexandrova, Gauff would have considered the match to be in her pocket once she raced off to a 5-1 lead in the third and the final set.

In what turned out to be nearly the biggest turnaround of the competition, Alexandrova won the next four games to tie at 5-5, and while Gauff had another chance to serve for the match at 6-5, the American dropped serve yet again.

The final set tie-breaker saw the two players hold serve till 3-3, before Gauff conceded a two-point lead. She then levelled things out at 5-5, saved two match-points, got one match-point of her own before converting the second one to complete a hard-fought victory.

Gauff had earlier not begun the season as well as she would have liked with second round exits at Abu Dhabi, Gippsland Trophy and the Australian Open before finally showing her full range of talent in the Adelaide International. Needing to qualify to make it to the main draw there, the teenager made it as far as the semifinal there before going down to Belinda Bencic.

Vondrousova v Gauff Prediction and Tip

Vondrousova is a slight favourite, 4/5 to win this and we are tipping her to edge past her American opponent in this one.

Tip: Vondrousova to win: 4/5 (bet365)
