Belinda Bencic v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

The only previous match between these two players came in the 2019 WTA Toronto, in the first round and Bencic had run away to a 6-2, 6-1 victory in that one. Things might have improved slightly for Potapova since.

Bencic Sees Off Kudermetova Challenge

Interestingly, Bencic had gone into her second round match against Veronika Kudermetova as a second-favourite with bookmakers offering 11/10 for her win. And the match went as close as those odds had suggested too.

It took the Swiss player two hours and 40 minutes to eke out a win, in a match which saw her earn four breaks of serve to her opponent’s three. Both had similar statistics too, especially with their first serve percentages at 55% to 56% and Kudermetova winning 71% of those to Bencic’s 73%.

That one extra break of serve came in the fifth game of the final set, where Bencic first frittered away three of them and then broke on the fourth opportunity.

Bencic then had another opportunity to break, at 5-3, which was her first match-point which was followed by Kudermetova missing a chance to break back. Bencic also missed three successive match-points on her own serve before finally putting it to bed off her fifth overall.

Before this Bencic had made it to the final of the Adelaide International before losing to Iga Swiatek and then crashed out in the first round of the WTA Doha.

Potapova Kills off Keys Chances

This is an interesting one. Potapova reached the third round by crushing Madison Keys in straight sets, a player who had earlier defeated Bencic in Doha last week. The question is whether Bencic can now usurp Potapova to complete a bit of a circle?

Potapova’s best world ranking has been 64th, but at 19 years of age she does have a lot of time to break back into that and then go on to make a dent in it.

And having beaten Laura Siegemund in the first round and then Keys in the second, both in straight sets, the Russian looks to have thrown the gauntlet. In both those matches, Potapova wasn’t tipped to be a favourite, having started off at 1/1 against Siegemund and 8/5 against Keys.

What she would love to do now is use some of the spark that has been on showing – she had earlier troubled Serena Williams in the third round of the Australian Open as well – to get past a player who hasn’t been at her best in recent times.

Bencic v Potapova Prediction and Tip

While Bencic is a favourite, starting out at 3/5, Potapova could make things difficult for her, and we are expecting a three-setter here.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
