Denis Shapovalov v Vasek Pospisil Head to Head

There have been three previous matches between these two players with Shapovalov leading 2-1 on head to head. One of Shapovalov’s win came at the Challenger level way back in 2017 and since then they have played in Montpellier and Auckland in 2020 with both players winning one apiece.

Interestingly, like this match, all their previous three encounters also came in the round of 16.

Shapovalov’s Made a Struggling Start

He had a first round bye in this tournament but that only means Shapovalov could well be rusty and in strife as a result, having played just five matches before this all season. What makes it worse for Shapovalov is he has won only two of them.

Starting out the season at the ATP Cup, Shapovalov was drawn to face two of the toughest competitors out there, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev and lost to both of them. The Zverev match, admittedly could have gone either way, with a final set tie-breaker going against Shapovalov.

At the Australian Open, which was Shapovalov’s next stop, he needed five sets to get past Jannik Sinner in the opening round, easily routed Bernard Tomic in the second but then lost to fellow Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Unfortunately for Shapovalov, he hasn’t played since, which means nearly a month without tennis and that lack of rhythm could play bit of a part in this one.

Pospisil Even Rustier

The big advantage for Shapovalov is despite his own lack of rhythm, he is up against a player in Pospisil who had played just one match all season coming into this tournament. Pospisil, ranked 67th in the world, participated in the Australian Open and as luck would have it, was drawn up against Daniil Medvedev in his opener.

He received a pounding, losing in straight sets and opted not to play anything else since.

Pospisil does have one small advantage of having played in the first round here, with Shapovalov having had a bye. He defeated Christopher O’Connell 6-3, 6-4 to shrug some of that rust off but does he have the game to trouble Shapovalov given the lack of his game-time?

Shapovalov v Pospisil Prediction and Tip

On paper, Shapovalov is an obvious favourite with bookmakers offering 1/2 for his win but it might not be that straightforward for him. We believe Pospisil could win a set of his own here and even more.

Tip: Pospisil to win a set – Yes: 8/13 (bet365)
