Marie Bouzkova v Anna Karolina Schmiedlova Head to Head

There has been one match played between these two players and incidentally that came in Mexico too, at the 2020 Monterrey Open. Bouzkova won that easily in straight sets.

Bouzkova’s Form Makes Her Title Favourite

The Czech has been in the form of her life, having begun with a third round appearance at the Yarra Valley Classic in February and then going all the way up to the final at the Phillip Island Trophy after that.

At the latter, while she lost to Daria Kasatkina in the final, Bouzkova’s road to the final consisted of wins over Jil Teichmann and Bianca Andreescu. And now, as if to prove that run to the final wasn’t a flash in the pan, Bouzkova has continued her streak with a couple of solid victories.

She was stretched to a third set by Irina Bara in the first round but came out strongly to rout Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-3, 6-2 in the second. The match lasted an hour and 21 minutes, and saw Bouzkova break her opponent thrice without return. In fact, forget getting broken, Bouzkova did not face a single break-point in the entire match.

Up against a player ranked nearly 60 places behind her now, Bouzkova will fancy herself a chance here.

Schmiedlova Consistent But Needs a Deeper Run

On the one hand, Schmiedlova is ranked outside the top 110, so expectations have to be tempered accordingly but she has also been a former world number 26. And to be fair, Schmiedlova has managed to carve out an extra win in this tournament already after falling in the second round at successive tournaments.

After losing to Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Gippsland Trophy and then falling to Ons Jabeur at the Australian Open, both in the second round, Schmiedlova won back to back matches here to reach the quarterfinal. This, incidentally, is her first quarterfinal appearance since the WTA Hobart International in 2019 – been a wait of more than two years already.

After crushing Nao Hibino in the first round, Schmiedlova needed three sets to get past Renata Zarazua in the second and set up this meeting with Bouzkova. There is no doubt she would know the difference in the quality of opposition between Bouzkova and her previous opponents but she will still harbour her hopes.

Bouzkova v Schmiedlova Prediction and Tip

All that you get for a Bouzkova win is 1/3 and while she remains our favourite as well, we think Schmiedlova’s fighting capabilities might push this into the third set. Or at least see a fighting two-setter.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
