Karen Khachanov v Matthew Ebden Head to Head

Khachanov has a 1-0 lead in the series, winning the only meeting between pair at the 2018 Paris Masters. However, Ebden did not complete the match as he was forced to retire midway through the second set. Khachanov went on to win his first and thus far only Masters 1000 title.

Nobody fancies facing Mackenzie McDonald right off the bat, especially on current form. The 25-year-old American has a made a fantastic start to 2021: reaching the second week of the Australian Open for the first time in his career, and winning the Nur Sultan Challenger last month.

But Khachanov’s indoors pedigree counted for far more than McDonald’s tenacious efforts from the past few weeks. Indeed, the Russian’s form is not too shabby either. Khachanov made the semifinals of the Great Ocean Road Open in Melbourne, and although his Australian Open journey was cut short by world no.10 Matteo Berrettini, he is building momentum for a busy period at the end of the first quarter of 2021.

Last week he made the quarterfinals in Rotterdam, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas. But he has made a winning start in Marseille –  a city he won his second tour-level title in 2018. Khachanov had a rough start against McDonald who had acclimatized himself with the conditions in France’s second city.

The first set was a decided in a tiebreak which Khachanov secured a late minibreak to take control. But it was a tale of unforced errors at the start of the second set on the Russian’s racket. Khachanov’s big serve began to misfire, and McDonald raced into a 2-0, and then a 3-1 lead. But the Russian proved a match for this cushion, breaking back almost immediately to stay in touching distance. Eventually, McDonald’s belief wore off, and Khachanov sealed a straight sets in a very testing encounter.

Second QF For Eden in 2021

Australia’s Matthew Ebden spent time convalescing on the treatment table in the past two seasons, and saw his ranking deteriorate to the depths of obscurity.

But thankfully, the 33-year-old has made a full recovery and his impact has been instant in the early parts of 2021. Ebden’s ranking is on the mend, and if he can master enough points between now and at the end of the clay court season, he could have at least break the top 200.

That is certainly a lot of work to do, but the signs are positive as Ebden advanced into his second quarterfinal of the season with a surprise victory of highly talented Finn Emil Ruusuvuori. The South-African born Australian, worked his way into the main draw with a pair of qualifying wins over Frederico Ferreira Silva and Mathias Bourgue.

After recording an upset win over Benjamin Bonzi, Ebden took his game to the next level with a clinical performance against Ruusuvuori. The qualifier stayed perfect in break point conversion (4/4), and landed 70% of first serve points. Ruusuvuori was largely a spectator for most of the action as Ebden remained true to his all-court, perseverance game.

This will be the Aussie’s second quarterfinal of the season, backing up his most recent in Singapore.

Khachanov v Ebden Prediction and Tip

The odds are haeavily stacked against the Australian veteran here. There is a huge gulf in rankings between these two players and that will be telling. Expect the Russian to advance to the last four.

Tip: Khachanov to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
