Cristian Garin v Juan Pablo Varillas Head to Head

While these two players have never faced off at the highest level before this, they have played each other at the Challengers. And the head to head is tied at 1-1 after Garin won at the 2016 Lima Challenger and Varillas overcame his more illustrious opponent in Padova.

Garin Finally Wins a Match

It has been a strange sort of a start to the season for the 22nd-ranked Garin, who had featured in two tournaments before this and lost in the opening rounds at both. At the Delray Beach Open on hard court surfaces, he fell to Christian Harrison in straight sets but he would have felt a bigger pang of shock from his next defeat.

That loss came to India’s Sumit Nagal, a player ranked outside the top 100. More vitally, it came on clay, which is Garin’s favourite surface, and in straight sets too.

Which is why Garin’s first round win here, in Chile, was vital to his own confidence. That he dropped just four games and needed just an hour and nine minutes to demolish Alejandro Tabilo in their second round match – Garin had a first round bye – can be looked as a stepping stone for Garin.

Garin will now look to build on from here, and try and cruise past another opponent who has never been ranked better than 135th on the ATP charts.

Qualifier Varillas with Career-Best Already

Varillas, who played his first ATP main draw match in this tournament last season and went on to win his maiden encounter against Filip Horansky, has now done one better. In what was the first ATP tournament he won another match in the main draw, Varillas went on to make it two in two to enter the last eight stage of the tournament.

In fact, this tournament had earlier also seen him win his first match across any level of competition, after the Chilean fell in the first round of the Antalya Challenger in January and failed to qualify for the main draw at either Cordoba and Buenos Aires.

Varillas then needed to win three qualifying rounds to get to the main draw here, before overcoming Joao Sousa and Federico Coria in back to back wins here.

What made those even more special victories were both came in straight sets, and the confidence the 25-year-old would have gained from them would be something to track against an opponent of this high a pedigree.

Garin v Varillas Prediction and Tip

Garin (4/11 with bet365) is a favourite but not overwhelmingly so against a player ranked that low that is. And that’s to do with his own form. Expecting him to win but not before Varillas gives it a keen fight.

Tip: Garin to win AND Over 20.5 games in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
