Aslan Karatsev v Egor Gerasimov Head to Head

The players have met once thus far, at this year’s Australian Open where Karatsev won their second round match dropping only one game in three sets.

Karatsev Hoping To Take Positives from Melbourne Forward

Playing in his first ever Grand Slam at this year’s Australian Open, Russian  Aslan Karatsev had a magical run, making the semi-finals defeating the likes of Egor Gerasimov, Diego Schwartzman, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Grigor Dimitrov before falling at the hands of world number one and eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Karatsev’s spectacular run saw him become an overnight star on the tour as his ranking went up more than 100 places from being a qualifier ranked in the top 150 in the world to world number 42 right now.

In his first round here last week at Doha, where he played the qualifiers of the Aussie Open in January, Karatsev defeated Qatari Mubarak Shana Zaqyid dropping four games in just above an hour, setting up a second round match against 2020 US Open winner Dominic Thiem.

Although Thiem was a strong favorite for this one, it did not seem to put any pressure on the Russian, who did well to clinch the first set in the tiebreak. The Austrian, however upped his level to win the next two sets, not before the Russian made it more clear that his Melbourne run was no flash in the pan though.

Aussie Open Whitewash on Gerasimov’s Mind

Bulgaria’s Egor Gerasimov has had a decent 2021 thus far by his standards, but what did not go so well for him was his second round encounter at the Aussie Open. Karatsev and he met for the first time and it was a 6-0,6-1,6-0 win for the Russian, something that will be fresh in the mind of Gerasimov.

Gerasimov,  who reached his maiden final in Pune last year, had a great run in Montpellier two weeks ago, where we defeated Andy Murray en route the semi-finals, before losing to eventual champion David Goffin in a tight three-setter.

The last two weeks have been unfortunate for the man from Belarus with opening round losses against top seed Daniil Medvedev and number two seed Stefanos Tsitsipas at Marseille and Rotterdam respectively.

Gerasimov will be hoping to not only reverse the outcome from Melbourne this match, but set himself up for a better run this week.

Karatsev v Gerasimov Prediction and Tip

Karatsev looked confident in Doha after his brilliant Aussie Open run and will be keen to continue this good patch. Expect him to once again defeat Gerasimov, in two tighter sets this time though.

Tip: Karatsev to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
