Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Malek Jaziri Head to Head

Tsonga is 2-0 against Jaziri, winning in Doha in 2012 and at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Both those matches needed a third set to separate the Frenchman from the Tunisian.

Tsonga Will Aim for a Flawless Start

Former World No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s return to court hasn’t been spectacular, but he has still managed to get his first win since 2019.

The World No. 66, who had not played since retiring against Alexei Popyrin in the first round of the Australian Open last year due to injuries and a surgery, returned to action in Montpellier last month.

However, the Frenchman’s first match since the break ended quickly as he went down to America’s Sebastian Korda 6-4, 6-2.

The 2008 Australian Open finalist then turned up for Open 13 in a bid to win a fourth title in Marseille and got off to a good start, winning his first match in 15 months, after he rebounded from a set down to beat Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in the first round.

Tsonga’s last win had come against Yasutaka Uchiyama in the Davis Cup in November 2019.

Having ended the winless drought, although he had barely played four matches since that win over the Japanese, he would have hoped for making a deeper run in Marseille, but it was not to be, as compatriot Ugo Humbert ended his campaign in the Round of 16 with a 6-3, 6-4 win.

A two-time Master 1000 champion, the 35-year-old has won 18 titles on the tour and finished runner-up on 12 occasions.

In Dubai, the big-serving right-hander will be hoping to regain his 2019 form, which saw him capture two titles and finish with a 33-19 record.

Jaziri Will Hope To Draw Inspiration From Gombos Win

Facing Tsonga in the first round in Dubai will be 262nd-ranked Malek Jaziri of Tunisia, who comes into the tournament with a 1-2 record this year.

Having started the year with a straight sets defeat to Alex de Minaur in the first round of the Antalya Open, the 37-year-old struggled to go past the qualifiers of the next four events he featured in. Three of those four were Challenger events and one was an ATP 250 event in Singapore.

The Tunisian, who reached a career-high ranking of 42 in 2019, finally ended his woeful run in Doha this week, where playing as a wild card he ousted Slovakia’s World No. 95 Norbert Gombos in the first round.

He was, however, dispatched by eventual champion Nikoloz Basilashvili in the Round of 16.

Tsonga v Jaziri Prediction and Tip

Jaziri, the 2018 Istanbul Open finalist, will be a rank outsider in this contest but given Tsonga’s sluggish return, the Tunisian could test the Frenchman a bit. However, one can expect Tsonga to win this in straight sets.

Tip: Tsonga to win in straight sets: 8/11 (bet365)
