Fabio Fognini v Stefano Travaglia Head to Head

There have been two previous matches played between Fognini and Travaglia and both were won by Travaglia, who has beaten his opponent on both the clay and hard court surfaces.

Fognini Slowly Turning Things Around?

After a rather underwhelming performance in the second half of the season last year, Fognini did not start off too well in 2021 either. He started off with a second round defeat at the Antalya Open and then lost his first match at the ATP Cup to Dennis Novak either.

However, the adrenaline seemed to have come back on for Fognini while representing Italy, as he won his next two encounters to help take his team to the final of the tournament. And while Fognini had no answers to Andrey Rublev’s thunderbolts in the final, he seemed to have finally found his rhythm back.

And that showed at the Australian Open too.

Fognini started off with a straight-set win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert, then edged over Salvatore Caruso before crushing Alex de Minaur in the third to make it his joint-best performance at the Australian Open. In the fourth, he lost to Rafael Nadal but he looks to have brought things under his control and the idea will now be to consistently go deep into competitions from here on in the lead-up to the clay court season.

Travaglia Hoping to Halt Losing Streak

Such are the vagaries of the tennis tour, it’s difficult to continue showing consistency, especially from players ranked outside the top 50. And Travaglia had a taste of that in this season when started off well in Antalya, turned it up at the Great Ocean Road Open before falling in three successive matches that followed.

Those three defeats came on the back of a stunning run from the world number 65 when he made it to the final of the tune-up tournament before the Australian Open. He lost to Jannik Sinner in that final before going down in the first round of the Australian Open and Marseille Open to make it three losses in a row.

And now playing in his first ever edition of this tournament, the 29-year-old Travaglia will hope he can get past his more illustrious Italian countryman and half his losing streak. It won’t be easy coming up against a player in a reasonable form and confidence.

Fognini v Travaglia Prediction and Tip

Interestingly, not much to choose between these two with Fognini starting off 4/5 while his opponent pegged at 1/1 here. Think Fognini could edge this contest.

Tip: Fognini to win: 4/5 (bet365)
