Alex de Minaur v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

The only previous time these two met in a competitive encounter was at the 2018 Surbiton Challenger where Chardy defeated de Minaur on the grass court surface to win the title.

de Minaur Looking to Add to Early Season Title

Australian de Minaur, who had a first round bye in this tournament, had earlier made it to the third round of his home Grand Slam, losing to Fabio Fognini in the end. That run came on the back of a title victory in Antalya, which saw him get past Nikoloz Basilashvili, David Goffin and Alexander Bublik in the final three matches of that tournament.

It was de Minaur’s fourth tournament win and first in nearly two years.

However, he hasn’t been able to retain some of his form from that tournament victory, losing in the second round at the Rotterdam Open against Kei Nishikori after having put it across fellow Aussie John Millman in the first round.

De Minaur will be playing in his very first ATP Dubai encounter, and the world number 22 will start off as a favourite to get past an opponent loaded with nearly two decades of tennis experience.

Chardy Solid This Season

Chardy limped through most part of the previous season, winning three of the 10 matches he played in and only registering two main draw victories all season. This year, however, it seems like Chardy has reinvented himself, using his solid experience to his advantage.

In the very first tournament that the Frenchman participated in, Chardy managed to win as many matches as he had done all of 2020 – he reached the semifinal at the Antalya Open with victories over Radu Albot, Fabio Fognini and Jan-Lennard Struff.

And Chardy then made it a second semifinal in a row when he edged past Marin Cilic, and crushed Gilles Simon and Taylor Fritz at the Murray River Open.

While Chardy had no answer to the firepower of Novak Djokovic in the first round of the Australian Open, he started out as a qualifier in Rotterdam and made it as far as the quarterfinal there before falling to Andre Rublev in a fighting match.

He has started off with a three-set win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas in this tournament so far and will hope to prove to be a big thorn in de Minaur’s flesh here.

de Minaur v Chardy Prediction and Tip

De Minaur starts off a heavy favourite at 2/5 but Chardy’s good form makes it difficult to avoid and the Frenchman could push his opponent hard here.

Tip: Chardy to win a set – Yes: 4/5 (bet365)
