Harris Hoping To Notch Up More Wins This Week

24-year-old South African Lloyd Harris has been on the tour for only a couple years now, but done well to break into the top 100 of the ATP rankings and notch up some good wins from time to time with increasing frequency over time.

The winner of 13 ITF Futures titles, Harris will be best remembered for taking a set off Roger Federer in the 2019 Wimbledon opener and he took that confidence and form to make the semi-finals of the Chengdu Open the same year.

A good start to 2020 before the pandemic saw him make the finals of the 2020 ATP 250 at Adelaide as well, where he lost in the finals to Andrey Rublev who went on a run last year.

2021 did not get off the best of starts with a first round loss to Egor Gerasimov at the ATP 250 in Melbourne as well as a Singapore Open opening match loss. But, the South African can take some heart from a third round loss at the Aussie Open.

Last week bode well for Harris over in Doha where he defeated Stan Wawrinka and narrowly lost to the in-form Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. Looking clinical in the qualifiers here in Dubai, Harris will be hoping for a good run here.

O’Connell Eyes Top 100 Breakthrough

Little known Aussie Chris O’ Connell has had a successful run on the ATP Challengers and ITF tours, but ran into some injury issues that delayed his start to the ATP Tour.

Ranked just outside the top 100, he has done unexpectedly well at the US Open last year and the Aussie Open this year to notch up wins against the likes of Laslo Djere and Jann-Lennard Struff.

Having only played ten singles matches in his career on the ATP circuit,  O’ Connell did well to come through the qualifiers at both Doha and Dubai and will be hoping he can notch up victories that will do wonders to his ranking and confidence.

Harris v O’Connelle Prediction and Tip

Both players have had some good wins this season already, but both will be looking to attain more consistency. Harris is clearly the more experienced of the two and will hope to further the good form that saw him beat Stan Wawrinka last week. Expect a straight sets win for the South African.

Tip: Harris to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
