Denis Shapovalov v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

There have been five previous matches between these two players with Struff surprisingly leading 4-1.

Shapovalov’s only win over Struff came in the 2018 Tokyo Open, in what was their first ever meeting before Struff defeated him twice on clay, once on grass and once on the hard courts of Cincinnati Masters in 2020.

Shapovalov Form a Concern

Having played in three tournaments so far this season including the ATP Cup, Shapovalov has won just three matches in 2021 and lost four. He has managed to maintain a world number 12 ranking because of the tweaked ranking system, but the Canadian would be getting slightly worried about the manner in which things have gone for him so far.

Before his first round bye here in Dubai, Shapovalov had lost both his ATP Cup matches – arguably to Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev – before he made it as far as the Australian Open. That he fell to Felix Auger-Aliassime, and the manner in which he lost would have pegged him back majorly managing to not win a set in the encounter.

And while he managed to overcome Vasek Pospisil in the opening round at the ATP Doha, and was a set up in his second round match there against Taylor Fritz, Shapovalov fell to another defeat there.

Which is why when he takes to court against a player he hasn’t had a great record against, Shapovalov will have a task on his hand to get into the second round.

Struff Overturns Four-Match Losing Streak

With a quarterfinal appearance at the Antalya Open and two wins from three matches at the ATP Cup after that, it did look like Struff was on his way to making a solid start to the season.

Things have gone rather pear-shaped for him since with four successive defeats including two to players who were 2/1 and 3/1 odds to win those encounters punctuating his record.

Fortunately for Struff, he has been able to stall that losing streak for now, defeating Mikhail Kukushkin in the first round here. He won 6-3, 6-2, in a match that lasted an hour and 13 minutes, breaking his opponent a whopping four times and in turn facing just one break-point.

What Struff will now hope for is for him to take advantage of a confident opening round victory to go with his brilliant record against the Canadian to drill deeper into the tournament.

Shapovalov v Struff Prediction and Tip

While Shapovalov is 8/15 to win the encounter we back Struff to make it that much tougher for his Canadian opponent. Looking at Struff to win a set at least.

Tip: Struff to win a set – Yes: 4/7 (bet365)
