Heather Watson v Harriet Dart Head to Head

The only previous meeting between Watson and Dart came on the ITF circuit in 2017. Watson won that encounter 6-1, 6-2 on the grass court of Surbiton to advance to the final before losing to Magdalena Rybarikova.

Watson Wanting Deeper Runs

Her last visit to Mexico had resulted in Watson winning her fourth WTA title, which included wins over Christina McHale and Leylah Fernandez, but since then the Brit’s form has fallen away drastically.

Other than a solid performance in the Battle of the Brits, an exhibition tournament played back home, Watson went on a five-match losing streak to end the season. Unfortunately for Watson, her nine back to back wins in that home-grown tournament didn’t help too much either.

And while Watson has broken her duck on the WTA circuit with an opening round victory at the Abu Dhabi Open in January and then another one at the Australian Open, those were the only two wins for the Brit all season.

Those two wins have been punctuated with three other losses, but to be fair to Watson those defeats have come against some of the better players in the world right now. She lost the second round match of the Abu Dhabi Open to Ekaterina Alexandrova, at the Grampians Trophy she fell to Veronika Kudermetova while Anett Kontaveit got the better of her at the Australian Open.

No Main Draw Win in Over a Year for Dart

It’s been a poor 12 months of tennis for the 153rd-ranked Dart, who has won no singles main draw match on the WTA tour for over a year now.

Having last won at the Australian Open of 2020, Dart went on to lose her second round encounter to Simona Halep there and since then has participated in six tournaments leading up to this one in Monterrey. She has either not qualified for the main draw or lost in the first round at them.

And the story was going to be no different for Dart in this competition either when she fell to a second round qualifying loss to Maria Camila Osorio Serrano but for a twist in fate as the Brit made it through to the main draw as a lucky loser.

Interestingly enough, Dart was one player whom Watson didn’t play during the Battle of the Brits, but will that surprise factor be enough for her to get better of Watson?

Watson v Dart Prediction and Tip

Watson’s experience and slightly better record this year should help her clinch this encounter but it might not be the most straightforward of matches.

Tip: Watson to win: 4/9 (bet365)
