Tormo at Career-Best after Maiden Title Win

Sorribes Tormo had shown signs of some spark when she made it as far as the quarterfinal at the Abu Dhabi Open earlier in the season but that seemed to have petered away when the Spaniard fell in the first round of both, the Gippsland Trophy and the Australian Open.

A win in the opener at the Phillip Island Trophy was followed by a withdrawal from the second round, leaving Sorribes Tormo with more questions than answers.

Which is why a title win at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico just last week would have given Sorribes Tormo a tremendous boost, with the Spaniard winning five matches in a row to lift her maiden WTA trophy.

What it also did was to help Sorribes Tormo gain enough ranking points to push her to number 57th in the world, her career-best ranking. The bigger question is if she can go the distance in this tournament in Monterrey, where Sorribes Tormo was ousted in the first round last year, thereby adding nicely to her stack of points again.

Tsurenko Yet to Win Main Draw Match in 2021

It’s been a struggle all around for Tsurenko. Once ranked 23rd in the world, she has fallen to outside the top 140 right now and that has been down to her inability to win main draw matches this season.

In three of the six tournaments that Tsurenko has played this year, she failed to make it past the qualifiers either while the three times she did make it to the main draw, the Ukrainian player lost in round one. This includes a defeat at the hands of Sorana Cirstea at the WTA Dubai last week, and at both the smaller tournaments in Australia – Gippsland Trophy and Phillip Island Trophy.

Here in Monterrey again, Tsurenko has made it to the main draw with wins over Katarzyna Kawa and Kristina Kucova but now faces a player who has been in some of the best form of her life.

Another first round defeat beckons for Tsurenko unless she can drastically turn things around.

Tormo v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

It’s bit of a surprise that Tormo starts off as short as 4/6 to win this given the form of both the players. Backing her to go through to the second round.

Tip: Sorribes Tormo to win: 4/6 (bet365)
