Roberto Bautista Agut v Jannik Sinner Head to Head

Resurgent Agut After Doha Outing

Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut has been among the more consistent players on the tour for the last couple seasons. Since the Covid-19 hiatus, he has however lost his consistency and has performed poorly closing out 2020 in both the US & French Opens with early losses failing to make the second week and in turn dropping out of the top ten of the rankings.

The 2021 season started well for him with a win at the ATP Cup against Alex de Minaur but has been followed by losses that week to Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini. An opening round loss at the Australian Open to Radu Albot was the icing on the cake to end a disappointing trip Down Under.

Things looked up for him at Montpellier where he made the finals before losing to David Goffin, but it was another disappointing outing last week with a first round loss to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at Rotterdam.

Agut had a good outing at Doha with some well sought wins against the likes of Reilly Opelka and in-form Kazakh Alexander Bublik, before an outstanding three-set clutch victory against top seed and 2020 US Open winner Dominic Thiem.

The Spaniard carried the confidence forward to defeat in-form top ten player Andrey Rublev in the semi-finals as well and just as he looked the favorite for a tenth career title in the finals, another player making a comeback, Nikoloz Basilashvili defeated him for the Doha title.

Coming to Dubai more confident but perhaps a little tired, Agut will consider himself fortunate to have had a shorter outing against Aussie Matt Ebden in his opener, with Ebden pulling out down 1-4 in the first set.

Sinner In Search Of Consistency

It has been a mixed start to the season for the Italian teenager Jannik Sinner. After a good last season and a half, he has been earmarked as one of the Next Gen to look out for and looked very much on course, given his form at the start of the season ATP 250 in Melbourne, where he won his second career title.

With the tightly packed schedule in Australia, the Italian ran into Denis Shapovalov in the opener at the Melbourne slam less than 36 hours after winning his Melbourne title. He nearly gave Shapovalov a scare before bowing out in a tough five-setter in that first round match at the year’s first major.

This was followed by an opening round loss to Aljaz Bedene in the Montpellier opener and suddenly the season was not looking so promising anymore. A minor niggle saw him pull of Rotterdam, but the Italian had a much better week in Marseille, before losing in the quarter-finals to the newly crowned world number two and eventual champion Daniil Medvedev.

Seeded 16th this week in Dubai, after an opening round bye, it was a tricky opener for Sinner against Kazakh Alexander Bublik, but the Italian did well to prevail in three sets and will hope this sets him up for a deeper run this week.

Agut v Sinner Prediction and Tip

This makes for an exciting match-up and both players have a lot to play for. Agut’s season got a much needed revival in Doha and Sinner would like more consistency across tournaments.

A good hard court battle on the cards, but the more experienced and more rested Agut may just prevail in a three-setter.

Tip: Agut to win in three sets:  3/1 (bet365)
