Fabio Fognini v Cameron Norrie Head to Head

There has been one previous match between these two players which was held in Los Cabos in 2018 and Fognini had won that semifinal in straight sets.

Fognini Staves off Travaglia in Opener

It took Fognini around an hour and a half to get past Stefano Travaglia but a straight-set win is what he needed to get going in this tournament following nearly a month of break from tennis.

Fognini, who had last played in and reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, kick-started his Acapulco Open campaign with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Travaglia in his opener.

Things didn’t always look rosy for Fognini who fell a break behind early in the first set and faced his opponent’s serve when down 4-5. Serving for the set, Travaglia felt his nerves and Fognini took full toll by breaking his opponent. Two games later, Fognini repeated the dose to finish off the set.

This was followed by an easier second set with Fognini finding rhythm to the proceedings while his opponent still reeling from under his missed opportunities in the first set. Fognini broke in the second and eighth game of the set to complete the victory.

The Italian former world number nine would be pleased with the result given the break from tennis and the fact he had struggled to get back into the game the last time he was away – during the pandemic.

Norrie Scythes Through Kozlov

Britain’s Norrie had made a strong start to the season with a semifinal appearance at the Delray Beach Open in January. It was a campaign that had included wins over Adrian Mannarino and Frances Tiafoe, and he followed it up with a third round entry at the Australian Open.

What Norrie would now love to do is show a lot more consistency in getting deeper into such tournaments. For the third tournament in a row now, for instance, he has made past his first round opponent but in both his previous two attempts, at Rotterdam and Marseille, Norrie has lost in the second round.

At Rotterdam, Norrie won just four games against Karen Khachanov and then fell to Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the second round in Marseille.

This is his chance to turn things around after having defeated Stefan Kozlov 6-3, 6-3 in his opener here. The only issue is Fognini showed no signs of rust and comes into this match having turned his form around from the end of the previous season.

Fognini v Norrie Prediction and Tip

While Fognini looks to be the in-form player and should be a favourite, it’s interesting to note he still starts off at 4/5 to win it. Tempting odds for a world number 17 taking on the 61st-ranked player.

Tip: Fognini to win: 4/5 (bet365)
