Alexander Zverev v Laslo Djere Head to Head

No matches have been played between Zverev and the 54th-ranked Djere before this.

Zverev Hoping to Come Into His Own

It has been a forgettable start to the season for Zverev but the manner in which he demolished the 17-year-old Carlos Alcaraz in his opening round here should signal his intentions. Needing a little less than an hour and a half, Zverev crushed the teenager’s ambitions of an upset in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-1.

Zverev didn’t have the best of starts either. Having come into the encounter with a 5-4 win-loss record for the year, the German was broken in his very first game as Alcaraz took a 2-0 lead in the opening set.

However, from there on, it was an all-Alexander show as Zverev won 12 of the next 14 games which included five breaks of serve from the 14 break-points he carved out for himself. On the other hand, he did face three more break-points on his own serve but the world number seven saved each of them to cruise to a victory.

What Zverev would like to do as he builds back into rhythm and form heading into the Miami Masters is to get more of his first serves in. Against Alcaraz he got just 60% of them going and that might cause him some issues against a tougher opponent.

Djere Sends Johnson Packing

Bookmakers had been unable to decide who was the favourite in Djere’s opening round match against Steven Johnson but the result painted a different picture. The Serb spent just an hour and 15 minutes in his victory against Johnson, in a match where he got nine opportunities to break and got himself three breaks of serves.

On the other hand, Djere himself won 89% of the first serves he got in, in turn not allowing his opponent a single break-point in the entire match, winning 6-2, 6-3 in the end.

Djere had entered the tournament on the back of some really poor tennis on hard court surfaces, having last won a match on it in January 2020. Yes, that’s right, Djere’s last hard court match win in the main draw of a competition had come more than 14 months ago in a tournament in Adelaide.

Since then Djere had participated in seven tournaments on hard courts and never won a match in the match draw. Till he played Johnson that is.

Zverev v Djere Prediction and Tip

There can be no surprises around the odds for this one with Zverev starting out at 1/12 to Djere’s 7/1 for their respective wins. Backing Zverev to roll over his opponent here.

Tip: Zverev to win AND Under 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
