Nina Stojanovic v Anna Kalinskaya Head to Head

The 2020 US Open had seen Kalinskaya overcome Stojanovic in the first round of the competition in straight sets. In 2017 these two had also met on the ITF circuit and Kalinskaya had won that one too in three sets to make it to the final.

Stojanovic Stuns Trevisan in Opener

Martina Trevisan’s record on clay is one of the best in the business over the past 12 months but she hasn’t been as proficient on hard court surfaces. Which is why when Stojanovic faced the Italian player in their opener, she started off as a bookmaker’s favourite and lived up to those odds.

Not only did Stojanovic win her opening round encounter but she also did that in some style, defeating Trevisan 6-3, 6-2 to move into round two. Needing an hour and 28 minutes for her win, Stojanovic overcame a 1-3 deficit in the first set to win 11 of the next 13 games to stroll into the next round.

In doing so, Stojanovic broke her opponent four times while losing her own serve just once off the only break-point she got.

This is the fourth tournament this season that the Serb has made it past the first hurdle but she is still waiting on her chance to make it two wins in a row. Will it be this time?

Kalinskaya with Rare Main Draw Win

Over the last 15 months since the start of the 2020 season, Kalinskaya’s only main draw win coming into this tournament was at the US Open of last year. That win, coincidentally, had come against Stojanovic but it was followed by a second round defeat to Karolina Muchova.

Since then, Kalinskaya’s career has been punctuated with qualifying losses and first round defeats including at the Gippsland Trophy and the WTA Guadalajara. Which is also why the Russian would be relieved to have not just made it through to the main draw here but also won her opener.

And not just that. Her victory in the first round here came against Nadia Podoroska, who was 1/2 to win the match. Podoroska had shown slight iffiness in her rhythm coming into that encounter too but for Kalinskaya to register a 6-4, 6-4 victory would have ensured some kind of a return to confidence for her.

Can she now make it two wins in a row?

Stojanovic v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip

Despite Stojanovic ranked more than 30 places higher, it’s Kalinskaya’s record against the Serb that makes her a favourite here. She is 4/6 to win this and we are backing her to come through.

Tip: Kalinskaya to win: 4/6 (bet365)
