Shapovalov In Sublime Touch

It was not the best of starts to the season for Denis Shapovalov, who lost both his matches at the ATP Cup and after a hard fought opening round win against Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open, he succumbed in the third round to compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Returning to the tour for the Doha and Dubai legs, Shapovalov did well to make the quarter-finals last week in Doha, where he was defeated by Taylor Fritz against the run of play, after being in control and looking to serve out the match.

Making his tournament debut in Dubai this week, Shapovalov registered a comprehensive win over Jan-Lennard Struff – a player he had struggled immensely against in the past, and followed it with a another straight sets win over Hubert Hurkacz, a junior rival who had won their last two meetings on the hard courts.

In back-to-back quarter finals here in the Middle East, the Canadian was up against the in-form French veteran Jeremy Chardy who has registered some impressive wins over the last two months. A crucial break in each set for Shapovalov, coupled with some clutch serving ensured another straight sets win was in the offing as he closed out and secured his place in the final four here in Dubai.

Harris’ Best Week On Tour Continues….

24-year-old South African Lloyd Harris has been on the tour for only a couple years now, but done well to break into the top 100 of the ATP rankings.

The winner of 13 ITF Futures titles, Harris had a good start to 2020 before the pandemic hit. The South African made  the finals of the 2020 ATP 250 at Adelaide, where he lost in the finals to Andrey Rublev who went on a run last year.

2021 did not get off the best of starts for Harris, but the South African started to get it it together after a third round loss at the Aussie Open with a strong win last week in Doha against Stan Wawrinka before a narrow loss to in-form Hungarian Marton Fucsovics.

Coming to Dubai this week, he looked clinical in the qualifiers and followed it with a good comeback three set win against Aussie Christopher O’ Connell in the first round. Against top seed and 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem, Harris played perhaps the best match of his career against a somewhat rusty Austrian and prevailed in straight sets.

Another impressive win against the uncanny Serb Filip Krajinovic in straight sets continued the run for Harris setting up a quarter-final against Kei Nishikori who himself is on a comeback trail.

The young South African was off to a flier against Nishikori, rushing to a 5-0 first set lead and claiming the set 6-1. While Nishikori fought back to take the set 6-3 and equalize the match, Harris upped the ante at 3-3 in the decider to clinch the match 6-3 in the third set and continue what he will consider as his best week on the tour thus far.

Shapovalov v Harris Prediction and Tip

The first meeting between these players should make for an exciting one. Both players have been in great touch in the last couple weeks, in Doha and Dubai and got progressively better with each match.

The Canadian is more experienced of the two and has had shorter matches this week, so will start as the favorite, but Harris has been excellent all week and can register another victory here. It will come down to who is better on the day, but we will predict Shapovalov winning in a decider.

Tip: Shapovalov to win in three sets:  3/1 (bet365)
