Ruusuvuori Hopes to Keep His First Round Record Intact

Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori heads to his first Miami Open with a 5-5 record in 2021.

The 21-year-old has not lost a first round match on the tour this season but is yet to make a third round appearance.

Beginning the season in Antalya, Ruusuvuori knocked out the Czech Republic’s Jiri Vessely in the first round, before falling to Italy’s Stefano Travaglia in the next.

He then ousted Serbia’s Viktor Troicki in the opening round of the Murray River Open, but was sent packing by Croatia’s Borna Coric in the Round of 32.

The Finn, who reached the second round of the U.S. Open on his Grand Slam debut last year, won his second match in the majors this year, upsetting 10th seed Gael Monfils in the first round of the Australian Open.

The three-hour-and-46-minute contest saw the Finnish right-hander save 17 break points on his way to a five-set win. He was, however, beaten in the next round by Spain’s Pedro Martinez.

The pattern continued in Marseille, as Ruusuvuori got past Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round after the Japanese player retired while trailing 2-6, 2-4, but faltered in the second round, losing to Australia’s Matthew Ebden in straight sets.

The Finn then featured in Dubai and won both his qualifying rounds to enter the main draw, where he once again won the opening round by ousting Australia’s Jordan Thompson but was defeated by Andrey Rublev in his next match.

The World No. 83, who is 16-18 overall in his young career, reached his maiden ATP semifinal in Nur Sultan last year.

Alcaraz Has Been Impressive This Year

On Wednesday, Ruusuvuori will meet 17-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, who has already started making an impact on the tour.

At 16, he made his ATP main draw debut in Rio last year and stunned fellow countryman and 41st ranked Albert Ramos Vinolas in the opener.

At 17, the Spaniard scored another massive win, this time at Melbourne-1, defeating top seed David Goffin in the second round.

Currently ranked 132nd in the world, Alcaraz has been very impressive at the start of the new season.

The 6’1” right-hander defeated Slovakia’s Filip Horansky, Russia’s Evgeny Karlovskiy and Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien to qualify for the Australian Open, and went on to beat the Netherlands’ Botic Van de Zandschlup on his Grand Slam main draw debut. He was knocked out by Sweden’s Mikael Ymer in the Round of 64.

He comes to Miami following a first round defeat to Alexander Zverev at the Mexican Open last week.

Ruusuvuori v Alcaraz Prediction and Tip

Difficult to choose between the two. But since Ruusuvuori is the higher-ranked player and has a little more experience at this level, he will be expected to win. However, he would be wary of the impressive teenager who has the ability to punch above his weight.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
