Garbiñe Muguruza v Xinyu Wang Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2020 Shenzhen Open where Muguruza had needed three sets to get past Xinyu in the first round of the competition.

Muguruza Second in Road to the Finals

Such has been Muguruza’s form this season that despite losing in the fourth round of the Australian Open, she is second in the list of players making up the Road to the Finals. At number one there is Naomi Osaka, the same player who had sent Muguruza out at the season’s first Grand Slam but not before the Spaniard had put her Japanese opponent to sword.

That fourth round defeat, incidentally, has been Muguruza’s only blip since a third round defeat at the Abu Dhabi Open early in the season. Other than those, Muguruza has made it to the final of every competition, losing to Ash Barty at the Yarra Valley Classic, falling to Petra Kvitova in the title-decider at Doha and then finally winning her first title of the season at the WTA Dubai.

In what was the last tournament Muguruza played before coming into this tournament in Miami, she was in rampaging form. Barring the loss of a set to Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinal of that event in Dubai, Muguruza won all matches in straight sets including victories over Amanda Anisimova, Iga Swiatek, Elise Mertens and Barbora Krejcikova.

Her form seems irresistible at the moment and something to watch out as she kick starts the Miami Open having never made it past the fourth round here. That could change this season.

Wang Sends Peterson Packing

Rebecca Peterson might be ranked 62nd in the world but China’s Xinyu Wang wasted no time in dispatching her from the tournament in their first round encounter. Xinyu needed an hour and 17 minutes in getting past Peterson, defeating her 6-2, 6-2.

In a match which saw eight breaks of serves across the two sets, Wang earned six of them as she overcame a 2-0 deficit in the opening set to clinch the encounter.

In fact, from being 0-2 down in the first set, Xinyu won eight games in a row to take a 2-0 lead in the second set before Peterson showed signs of fighting back. Unfortunately for the Swede, Wang broke her back to reclaim the lead and then broke her back for a third time in the set to complete the victory.

Wang is yet to win two matches in a row in the main draw of competitions this season and against Muguruza, it looks like things are only going to get tougher.

Muguruza v Wang Prediction and Tip

The gulf in the pedigree of these two players is so wide that Muguruza starts off at 1/16 to win this as compared to a 9/1 for a Wang win. While Muguruza’s form demands those kind of odds, we could look at the game handicap odds for this one.

Tip: Games Handicap Muguruza -6.5: 8/11 (bet365)
