Khachanov Looking To Go Deep

World No. 22 Karen Khachanov will begin his fifth Miami Open challenge on Friday.

The Russian, who achieved a career-high ranking of No. 8 in 2019, comes into the tournament with a decent 9-5 record this year, which saw him feature in one semifinal, two quarterfinals and the third round of the Australian Open for the third successive year.

A four-time winner on the tour, Khachanov began the season at the Great Ocean Road Open, and scored wins over Max Purcell, Kevin Anderson and Botic Van de Zandschulp en route to the semifinal, which he lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in three.

At the Australian Open, Khachanov continued his good form, beating Aleksander Vukic and Richard Berankis in the first two rounds but was denied a maiden spot in the Round of 16 by Matteo Berrettini, who came out on top despite playing through abdominal pain.

In Rotterdam, Khachanov got another tournament off to a great start, knocking out the eighth seed Stan Wawrinka in the first round and Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the next to reach the last eight, before falling to second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The 6’6” Russian reached another quarterfinal in Marseille, but failed to reach the semis after going down to Australia’s Matthew Ebden.

Both his quarterfinal exits in Rotterdam and Marseille saw him clinch the first set before losing the next two.

He played two three-setters in Dubai as well, winning his first round match against Alexei Popyrin but losing in the second round to Jeremy Chardy. Yet again the Russian had won the first set but couldn’t capitalize on the start.

Yet to lose a final, Khachanov, who was 20-15 last year, has won four ATP titles, including a Masters 1000 in Paris. He will be desperate to add another soon having not won one since 2018.

Hanfmann Sends Johnson Packing

Facing Khachanov in the Round of 64 will be Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann, who knocked out the United States’ Steve Johnson in the first round.

Winning 69% points on his serve, Hanfmann converted four of 10 break points, while saving one of two to win the one-hour-and-25-minute contest 7-5, 6-2.

The win improved the 29-year-old German right-hander to 2-4 this year.

Having begun the season with back-to-back defeats in Melbourne-1 and at the Australian Open, Hanfmann got his first win over James Duckworth in the Round of 32 in Singapore. But the win was followed by three other defeats, one of them at a Challenger event in Biella.

Ranked 108th in the world, Hanfmann was 7-3 last year, thanks to his run to the final in Kitzbuhel, which he lost to Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic.

Previously, the German had reached a first career final in Gstaad in 2017.

Khachanov v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

Although Hanfmann dominated the contest against Johnson, he will have his task cut out against the Russian. Expect Khachanov to advance to the Round of 32.

Tip: Khachanov to win in straight sets: 4/7 (bet365)
