Sevastova Advances After Halep Withdraws

World No. 57 Anastasija Sevastova advanced to the Round of 16 without even taking the court in the third round after the third seed Simona Halep withdrew from the competition due to a right shoulder injury.

A four-time champion on the tour, Sevastova had defeated Serbia’s Olga Danilovic 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) in a two-hour-and-23-minute first-round contest. The 30-year-old then rallied from a set down to oust the United States’ Cori Gauff 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The former World No. 11, Sevastova, who had a woeful 2020 season, that saw her win just two of her 12 matches, improved to 6-6 in 2021 after knocking out the 31st seed in the second round.

This is the first time that the 30-year-old has reached the fourth round of the Miami Open. She made a second-round exit in 2017 and reached only as far as the third round in 2018 and 2019 in her previous three appearances.

This year, Sevastova had a poor 1-3 start from her three events in Melbourne, before winning two in a row in Adelaide and reaching her first quarterfinal since winning the Baltic Open in Latvia in July 2019.

Konjuh Stuns Swiatek

Facing Sevastova in the fourth round will be a resurgent Ana Konjuh, who scored back-to-back top-20 wins to enter the fourth round of the Miami Open.

The Croatian wildcard, who began the tournament with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 win over Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova, defeated 18th seed Madison Keys 6-4, 6-2 in the second round before upsetting the reigning French Open champion and 15th seed Iga Swiatek 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

The 23-year-old Croatian, who struggled with injuries after making an impact as a teenager, has had to undergo four surgeries over the last seven years and looks to have regained her teenage form in Miami.

A former World No. 20, Konjuh who reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals in 2016, won her only WTA title in Nottingham in 2015 and finished runner-up in Auckland in 2017.

Against Swiatek, Konjuh converted just four of 14 break points while saving four of seven on her serve. She struck 40 winners and made just 18 unforced errors to win a third consecutive main draw match for the first time since reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2017. It is also the first time in four years that the Croatian has won two back-to-back matches against top 20 players.

Sevastova v Konjuh Prediction and Tip

Sevastova has slowly found her rhythm and has looked good in the tournament so far. However, she will find the going tough against the resurgent Konjuh, who has looked very sharp in her first three rounds. Expect the Croatian to continue her stunning run with a first win over the Latvian.

Tip: Konjuh to win: 8/11 (bet365)
