Marin Cilic v Lorenzo Musetti Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between the 45th-ranked Cilic, and Musetti, ranked 94 in the world rankings.

Cilic Beats Garin In A Thriller

For just the second time this season, Marin Cilic completed back-to-back wins in a tournament, and advanced into the third round of the Miami Masters for the first time since 2018.

Cilic’s revival hasn’t taken shape since recovering from knee injury a couple of years ago, but he showed immense resilience and fighting qualities in his second round match against Chile’s top ranked player Cristian Garin.

The Croat roared back after dropping the opening set 6-3. The two players exchanged a pair of breaks in the second set. And with the set destined to be decided by a tiebreak, Cilic found a new level. The crucial difference-maker was how he managed to redirect Garin’s power, and secured a decisive break in game 11 which enabled him to serve out and level the match.

In the third, neither player tolerated risks and there were 12 successive holds, taking the match into a tiebreak. Cilic in his part saved an astonishing 11 out of 15 break points in the match. Given the fine margins all evening, the Croatian’s big serve bailed him out of precarious positions.

Cilic fired 15 aces in total, and he clinched the match with a powerful backhand drive, in a match that was 16 minutes shy of the three-hour mark.

Musetti Continues Meteoric Rise

Lorenzo Musetti cracked the top 100 of the ATP rankings for the first time last week after a sensational run to the semifinal of the Mexican Open as a qualifier, simultaneously becoming the youngest player inside the top 100.

And it seems the Italian teenager is not willing to stop dreaming. Musetti, like a kid in a candy shop, wants a taste of every milestone tennis has to offer. He has already beaten a former Grand Slam champion in Wawrinka (Rome 2020), a former top 10 player in Grigor Dimitrov, and a current top 10 player in Diego Schwartzman.

With a generous draw in Miami, Musetti has grabbed the chance of making another ever-lasting impression with both hands. Having seen off American wildcard Michal Mmoh in straight sets, he dismissed mercurial Frenchman Benoit Paire, who continues to shamelessly tank tennis matches.

Just days ago, Paire admitted he prefers losing to winning in the current pandemic landscape, and even put his arms up in celebration after going down 6-3 6-3 to the young Italian in just 61 minutes.

Cilic v Musetti Prediction and Tip

Musetti’s magical run of results means that he goes in as the bookies’ favorite in this match against a former Grand Slam champion. It would be a statement win by Cilic if he is able to recover from that marathon against Garin and beat a confident Musetti. If the Croatian can replicate his serving display against the Chilean, he stands a chance of pushing the Italian into his deepest reservoirs.

Tip: Cilic to win a set: 4/9 (bet365)
