Aryna Sabalenka v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head

Vondrousova leads Sabalenka 2-1 on head to head. The first of these three encounters had come in the qualifiers of the Biel Open in 2017 which Vondrousova won, and this was followed by another win for her at the Indian Wells Open in 2018.

These two then met again at the Hertogenbosch that year, and Sabalenka overcame the loss of the first set 6-0 to complete a three-set victory.

Sabalenka Comes Through after a Tussle

Sabalenka did not need a third set against Veronika Kudermetova but the match did turn out to be a cagey affair and one of fine margins. Not often, for instance, do you see a women’s singles match end with a total of four break-point opportunities and just three breaks of serves.

In first set, it was Kudermetova who started off with a break of serve in the third game off the first break-point. Sabalenka never faced another break-point in the entire match after that, and broke back as her opponent tried to serve for the set, pushing it into a tie-breaker.

The tie-breaker looked to be a close affair too till they got to 4-4 but Sabalenka upped the ante at that stage, winning the next three points in a row to squeak past her Russian opponent.

The close nature of the match didn’t change too much in the second set when neither player came close to breaking serve till 4-4. It was in the ninth game that Sabalenka got another couple of chances, the second of which he converted before serving it out to love to claim the match.

Sabalenka had earlier needed to overturn a 6-0 scoreline in the first set to defeat Tsvetana Pironkova in three sets.

Vondrousova Overcomes Bencic in Three

The contrast in the two players, Vondrousova and her opponent Belinda Bencic was stark. The Czech faced just four break-points in the entire match, and while Bencic converted three of them, Vondrousova also obliged with breaking her opponent four times out of the 12 chances she had.

As a result, Vondrousova came back from a set down to complete a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over the Swiss number one and advance to the fourth round, continuing to show the form she had the last time this tournament was played in 2019.

Then, Vondrousova had made it as far as the quarterfinal, and here, she has already beaten Wang Qiang and Bencic so far, but now faces a sudden improvement in class as she bids to emulate that 2019 showing.

It won’t be easy but with a semifinal at the Yarra Valley Classic and a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open, Vondrousova will know she has the form to test Sabalenka out.

Sabalenka v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

The difference between the two players can be seen from Sabalenka starting out at 4/11 while Vondrousova being 11/5 to win this. We expect it to be another closely-fought match for which one can look at the games handicap.

Tip: Games Handicap Vondrousova +4.5: 4/5 (bet365)
