Jiri Vesely v Andrej Martin Head to Head

These two have never played each other at the top level before this. Vesely and Martin have, however, featured in three matches at a competitive level – one in the Futures circuit, once in Davis Cup and another time in a Czech League match. Vesely leads 2-1 which includes a win in the 2020 Davis Cup.

Pune Open Winner Vesely Hoping for Good Clay Start

He won his second ATP title last season at Pune, and since then Vesely has shown the odd spark of brilliance but at the same time has been inconsistent with his results as well.

This year has been a case in point.

A first round loss at the Antalya Open meant he hadn’t had an easy start to the season but he seemed to have quickly turned things around with a quarterfinal appearance at the Murray River Open. These included wins over Casper Ruud and Ricardas Berankis, both favourites in those matches.

This has, however, been followed by defeats in the second rounds at both, the Australian Open and Montpellier Open and when he stumbled out in the opener at the Miami Open, that inconsistency had come back to haunt him.

Vesely will aspire for more consistency as he prepares to go into his first match of the season on clay.

Martin Happier on Clay

It was an underwhelming, yet, in many ways an expected start to the season for Martin. Not a big fan of the hard court surfaces, Martin won just one set across the three first round matches he featured in to kick-start the year before he moved to the more comfortable clay court environment.

Since that switch, Martin has played in a couple of Challengers on the red dirt and made it to the semifinal at one of them in Concepcion but he would love to do a lot better at the highest level. With an opening round loss at the Cordoba Open and the Buenos Aires Open, and a second round defeat in Santiago, it’s hard not to see the kind of turnaround he needs.

What would bother the Slovak a lot more than just those losses, a few of them already haven’t come against players ranked too much higher than him or even those who are traditionally better clay-courters. Can he look at this competition as a start to the good times on clay leading up to Roland-Garros?

Vesely v Martin Prediction and Tip

Vesely is 3/5 to win this as compared to Martin who starts off at 6/5 and given the recent record and confidence levels for the two, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise why. Backing Vesely for a win here.

Tip: Vesely to win: 3/5 (bet365)
