Marco Cecchinato v Thomas Fabbiano Head to Head

While these two have never faced off on the ATP’s highest circuit, there was a phase between 2010 and 2015 when they faced off at the Futures and Challengers circuit. In the four encounters between them at those lower circuits, Fabbiano won three times, before Cecchinato pulled one back in their fourth match at the Todi Challenger.

Cecchinato 1-6 This Season

This has been as woeful a start it could have been for the former world number 16 Cecchinato. Other than a hard-fought three-set win over Hugo Dellien in the first round of ATP Cordoba earlier this year, he has played in six matches and lost all of them.

Three of those matches have come on clay, but defeats to Diego Schwartzman (in Cordoba) and Laslo Djere and Facundo Bagnis (in Buenos Aires and Santiago) would have been difficult to take. Especially for a player who has three ATP titles, all of which came on the red dirt.

To underline Cecchinato’s preference for clay, all of his 11 Futures and Challengers have also been on clay, making his 1-3 record on that surface this season a bit of a shocker.

Other than that, opening round losses at the Murray River Open, Australian Open and ATP Dubai have meant his ranking has fallen from 79th in the world to his current 90th.

A major turnaround is needed but will Cecchinato be up to the task?

Fabbiano Waiting for Maiden Main Draw Win This Season

The former world number 70 Fabbiano has fallen by more than 100 places and that has equated to the need to feature in the qualifiers at all the ATP tournaments he has played this year. And having managed to make it to the main draw at just one of them, in Miami, he fell in the first round there.

Unfortunately for Fabbiano, even other than that, at the Challenger circuit, he has struggled to get going.

Featuring in four of the Challenger tournaments, at Quimper and Biella, Fabbiano holds a 2-4 win-loss record this season.

What makes it even tougher for him coming into this encounter against Cecchinato is he has played in not even one clay-court match in an ATP tournament since the 2019 Kitzbuhel Open. Not going to be too easy for this 178th-ranked Italian.

Cecchinato v Fabbiano Prediction and Tip

Despite Cecchinato’s form issues, this should be a straightforward victory for him against a player who has had his own poor streak to go with problems on clay.

Tip: Cecchinato to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
