Elena Rybakina v Caty McNally Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 21-year-old Kazakh and the 19-year-old American.

Rybakina Looking to Regain 2020 Form

Following a brilliant 2020 season, Elena Rybakina has not had a great 2021 season so far. The 21-year-old Kazakh, who reached five finals and won the title in Hobart last year, comes to Charleston with a 6-6 record this year.

Beginning the season in Abu Dhabi, Rybakina defeated Italian qualifier Lucrezia Stefanini, China’s Xiyu Wang and Russia’s Daria Kasatkina to reach the quarterfinal, which she lost to Aryna Sabalenka despite taking the first set.

Since then, the World No. 23 has struggled with form, making early exits from all the other tournaments she featured in.

At the Grampian Trophy, Rybakina was knocked out by Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova in the Round of 16, while at the Australian Open, Rybakina won her first round against Russia’s Vera Zvonareva but couldn’t match her 2020 performance in Melbourne, falling to France’s Fiona Ferro in the Round of 64. (Last year, the Kazakh player had made a maiden third round appearance in the tournament.)

Disappointments continued for Rybakina in the Middle East, as she went down to German qualifier Laura Siegemund in the first round of the Qatar Open and could only win one round in Dubai against China’s Saisai Zheng before falling to Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur.

In her last tournament in Miami, Rybakina again won her first round contest, this time against Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, but fell in the next round to Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo.

A two-time winner on the tour, Rybakina won her first title in Bucharest in 2019, which was a clay court event. In 2020, the aggressive baseline player finished runner-up in Shenzhen, St. Petersburg, Dubai and Strasbourg in addition to winning her second career title in Hobart.

McNally Will Have Her Task Cut Out

Facing Rybakina in the first round will be America’s Caty McNally, who is 4-3 in the main draws this season.

The 19-year-old right-hander, who lost in the qualifiers of the Australian Open, the Miami Open and the Adelaide International this year, won her first round at the Gippsland Trophy, beating Sara Sorribes Tormo before going down to Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova in the Round of 32.

She delivered her best performance of the year in Guadalajara last month, reaching the quarterfinals by beating America’s Katie Voleynets and Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek before falling to eventual finalist Eugenie Bouchard.

Ranked 119th in the world, McNally, who is yet to break into the top 100 in singles, is a solid doubles player and has won two WTA titles along with Cori Gauff. She is also a French Open junior singles finalist and a junior doubles champion.

Elena Rybakina v Caty McNally Prediction and Tip

Expect an easy win for Rybakina. The 10th seed is more experienced and more accomplished and will look to dominate the proceedings on Monday.

Tip: Rybakina to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
