Shelby Rogers v Kristina Mladenovic Head to Head

There have been three previous matches played between these two players and Mladenovic leads 2-1. On hard court surfaces, the record stands at 1-1.

Their latest meeting came at the Washington Open of 2019 where Mladenovic won 6-4, 6-4.

Rogers Played Just One Match on Clay in 2020

Not quite at her best on clay, Rogers comes into this season having played just one WTA main draw match on that surface in 2020. It came at the French Open where Rogers lost to Kamilla Rakhimova, a player starting out at odds of 3/1 to win that encounter, with the American player winning just five games in the entire match.

And while Rogers did play in a couple of other exhibition tournaments as well on the surface, things did work out as well as she would have liked.

The story had been no different the previous season either. Of the six main draw matches Rogers had played on clay in 2019, she won just two. This included a second round appearance at the Charleston Open as well, a tournament where she was a quarterfinalist in 2017.

Will she now be able to turn things around on clay following a solid start to the season on the hard court surfaces? After all, a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open and a quarterfinal at the Yarra Valley Classic would have acted as a shot in her arm.

Mladenovic on a Three-Match Losing Streak

Like her opponent, even Mladenovic will be playing her first match on clay for the season but more vitally she has struggled to get the results come her way in more recent times. Having reached the third round at the Australian Open and won a couple of rounds in Lyon, Mladenovic would have expected something better but has hit a three-match losing streak coming into this tournament.

After that quarterfinal defeat in Lyon, Mladenovic fell 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of the WTA Dubai to Jessica Pegula, expectedly, but to then lose to Margarita Gasparyan and Danielle Collins in her next two matches wouldn’t have been easy for the Frenchwoman.

Interestingly, Mladenovic last won a match on clay in May 2019, nearly two years ago with two defeats and no wins in 2020 ruining her record in more recent times. The world number 56 will hope she can take advantage of her opponent’s discomfiture on clay as well but will that be enough?

Rogers v Mladenovic Prediction and Tip

Rogers is 9/25 to win this while Mladenovic starts at a whopping 2/1 which we believe is too much of a difference between two players who might be slightly more evenly matched on clay. Backing Mladenovic to win a set here.

Tip: Mladenovic to win a set – Yes: 1/1 (bet365)
