Sara Sorribes Tormo v Sara Errani Head to Head

There have been three previous matches played between these two players and Errani has won every single time. The first came at the Charleston Open in 2015, and this was followed by the 2018 Bol Open and the 2020 Acapulco Open.

What’s probably changed is Sorribes Tormo is in the form of her life and could turn things around if she can keep playing in the same manner she has all season.

Sorribes Tormo Improves to 58th

Ranked 91st in the world at the start of the 2020 season, Sorribes Tormo has shown tremendous improvement over the last few weeks to improve to 58th at the start of this week. By the time she plays her first round match, she would have broken into the top 50 for the first time as the new rankings are revealed come Monday.

This change comes on the back of three successive tournament results which have gone in favour of the Spaniard.

It started with a title win at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico, her first ever, and she followed that up with a semifinal appearance in Monterrey. And as if to prove those were no flashes in the pan, Sorribes Tormo then stunned Jennifer Brady, Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur to notch up her best performance at a WTA 1000 event.

While she went down to Bianca Andreescu in the quarterfinal there, she took the Canadian to three sets and the repercussion from that showing in Miami would be a Sorribes Tormo brimming with a lot of confidence. Clay, incidentally, is her favourite surface.

Errani Waiting for Return of Clay

Not one to enjoy hard court surfaces too much, Errani couldn’t have waited for any longer for clay court competitions to return on the WTA circuit. And given Errani’s doughty attitude, it doesn’t really matter how poorly her recent performances on hard court have been.

After having made it as far as the third round at the Australian Open, the Italian has gone on a five-match losing streak. It began with a shock loss at the hands of Su-Wei Hsieh at that very tournament before Errani fell to Lin Zhu at the Phillip Island Trophy, Ankita Raina at the Guadalajara Open, Harriet Dart in Monterrey and then against Bethanie Mattek-Sands in Miami.

The last three of these losses came in the first round of the qualifiers.

Can Errani, who is a former French Open finalist, get back to her recent best – a best that saw her make it to the second round at Roland-Garros last year as a qualifier – now that she is back on clay?

Sorribes Tormo v Errani Prediction and Tip

No surprises that Sorribes Tormo is 1/5 to win this but on clay Errani could give her opponent a fight. We will go with the games handicap for this one.

Tip: Games Handicap Errani +5.5: 8/11 (bet365)
