Lucas Pouille v Ricardas Berankis Head to Head

Pouille won their only main draw meeting at St. Petersburg in 2015, while Berankis had won at a lower level in France in 2014. Both of these matches needed a third set to decide the winner.

Pouille Hoping to Return to Form Soon

2019 Australian Open semifinalist and 2016 Wimbledon and U.S. Open quarterfinalist, Lucas Pouille has struggled on his return to tennis after almost a year of no action.

Sidelined by a right elbow operation last year, Pouille is 1-2 from two ATP Tour events this year. The 27-year-old lost to France’s Benjamin Bonzi in the first round in Montpellier and to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Round of 16 in Marseille. The World No. 81’s only win this season came against Slovakia’s 286th-ranked Alex Molcan in the first round in Marseille.

A five-time champion on the tour, Pouille has also featured in three Challenger events this year, and has struggled to beat players way outside the top 150 in the world. He made a first round exit in Quimper-1 and faced second round defeats in Quimper-2 and Biella-4.

The Frenchman, who has a winning record on all surfaces, is 34-28 overall on clay and has reached two finals on the surface, finishing runner-up in Bucharest in 2016 and winning the title in Budapest in 2017.

The former World No. 10 will be looking to regain his 2019 form soon and would hope to begin well in Andalucia.

Berankis Has Not Lost a First-Round Match This Year

Facing Pouille in the first round on Monday will be World No. 89 Ricardas Berankis, who is 4-3 in 2021.

The 30-year-old Lithuanian, who has played more and produced far better results on hard courts over clay, is a two-time ATP finalist, losing the title clash in Los Angeles in 2012 and Moscow in 2017.

This year, Berankis, who had a 7-7 record in 2020, played his first tournament in Melbourne-2 and defeated India’s Sumit Nagal and Australia’s Jason Kubler to reach the Round of 16, before he was sent packing by the Czech Republic’s Jiri Vesely.

At the Australian Open, Berankis defeated Nagal once again to reach the second round but was stopped from progressing further by Russia’s Karen Khachanov.

At the Miami Open, last week, the former World No. 50 defeated Italy’s Federico Gaio in the first round but lost to Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round.

Lucas Pouille v Ricardas Berankis Prediction and Tip

Two years ago, Pouille would have been a heavy favourite to win this contest. However, he has not been in good form ever since his return and Berankis will definitely sense an opportunity. The fact that Berankis hasn’t been able to beat a higher-ranked player this season may not be encouraging though. Expect a good fight, with the Frenchman going through to meet the fourth seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the next round.

Tip: Pouille to win: 1/2 (bet365)
