Wang Yafan v Emiliana Arango Head to Head

This will be the first match between Yafan and Arango.

Yafan in a Horror Run

Yafan began the previous season in Shenzhen with a win over Sara Sorribes Tormo and then went on a five-match losing streak after that. She managed to grab a couple of victories at the Monterrey Open after that to reach the quarterfinal but since then, hasn’t won a match.

Yep, you read that right. Yafan hasn’t won a match since March 4, 2020, more than 13 months since she last got out of a tennis encounter with a victory to her name.

What needs to be quickly added is the Chinese player didn’t play a single match in 2020 once the pandemic hit and only returned to the sport in 2021. And in the six tournaments she has featured in this year, the 123rd-ranked player has lost six matches without winning even one.

Things have come to such a head that Yafan has now begun losing to players who have entered the match at odds of 2/1 as well, and at some level, her issues look to be more mental than technical.

It could be a matter of that first win in all these months which turns things around for the Chinese player and this could be a good opportunity for her. Because up against her is a 20-year-old player who has never seen the inside of the top 300 rankings.

That said, Yafan last won a match on clay in 2018!

Arango Waiting to Add to Her WTA Wins

It was at this very tournament in 2018 where Arango had won her first ever main draw match on the WTA circuit. She went on to make it to the quarterfinals of the Bogota Open that season with a second round victory over Jasmine Paolini but since then, Arango hasn’t won any WTA matches.

With her performances at the ITF level not being the best either, it is no surprise Arango’s ranking has fallen from her career-best of 345th to her current 484th.

Such have been her struggles, the Colombian has featured in five ITF competitions this season and failed to make it past the qualifiers in three of them. And while her talent has never been in doubt, she will need to do a lot more to ensure she can get past an off-colour but way more pedigreed opponent in this opener.

Arango’s only advantage here is her opponent’s struggles on clay but will she be able to convert that into a win?

Yafan v Arango Prediction and Tip

Yafan is 4/7 to win this, which isn’t too short because of the manner in which she has struggled to convert victories. We expect her to come good at some point and this might be a good chance for her and for us too at 4/7.

Tip: Yafan to win: 4/7 (bet365)
