Veronika Kudermetova v Emma Navarro Head to Head

Kudermetova and Navarro have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Kudermetova Crashes Past Krawczyk

Russia’s Kudermetova had started off well this season with a finals appearance at the WTA Abu Dhabi, but has seen her performances plateau off since then. Which is why a convincing first round victory here in Charleston against Desirae Krawczyk should go some way in restoring some of her confidence.

In less than an hour of tennis, Kudermetova demolished Krawczyk 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the second round. In doing so, the world number 38 broke her opponent five times while herself losing just nine points on serve and never facing a break-point.

Kudermetova comes into this season on the back of a poor showing on clay last year where she had lost her openers at the WTA Prague and Italian Open and only winning her first round at the French Open before she fell to Petra Martic.

There have been the odd sparkling performances on this surface off Kudermetova’s racquet, especially in 2019 when she made it as far as the quarterfinals of three of the tournaments and reached the third round at the French Open.

With a 481st-ranked opponent up next, she has a good chance of winning back to back matches on clay for the first time since that French Open showing.

Navarro Surprises Zarazua

Navarro’s career-best ranking is 412th, and she has entered this tournament having fallen to 481st in the world. That has been down to her inability to play any tennis since the start of this season, with the Charleston Open opener against Renata Zarazua being her first match of the year.

To say that a Navarro win, and that too in straight sets wasn’t something too many would have given a second thought about, would probably be the understatement of the season.

Navarro used up an hour and 32 minutes to wrap up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Zarazua, breaking her opponent five times in the entire match. Zarazua had her moments, after she twice broke her unheralded opponent to take the lead, only to lose her serve in the very next game.

In the second set, Navarro went 3-1 up, and after sharing two breaks of serves with her opponent, wrapped up the match on her second match-point.

Can she now repeat that dose against a much higher-ranked player?

Kudermetova v Navarro Prediction and Tip

Navarro had a good run against Zarazua but Kudermetova should have no real difficulties pulling through in straight sets.

Tip: Kudermetova to win in straight sets: 8/11 (bet365)
