Jasmine Paolini v Lara Arruabarrena Head to Head

Their only previous match came on the clay courts of this tournament in 2019, where Arruabarrena overcame Paolini in straight sets to make it to the quarterfinals.

Paolini Demolishes Ahn in Opener

There was exactly one hour of tennis in Paolini’s first round match against Kristie Ahn, with the Italian player winning 6-3, 6-0 to proceed to the second round. Paolini, a clay court specialist, who helped herself to four main draw wins on this surface in last year’s truncated season, was rarely tested by her American opponent in her opener.

Like Ahn, she also faced five break-points in the match but that’s where the similarity ended. Paolini broke Ahn four times while in turn saving all the five break-points she had to face to ease herself into this meeting against Arruabarrena.

It wasn’t the quickest start from Paolini, as all five of the break-points against her came in her first three service games. Once she had got past that, however, Paolini showed no mercy on her opponent, breaking her four times in a row, and winning eight games in succession.

Paolini will now look to up the ante and emulate her performance in Palermo in 2019 where she last reached the quarterfinal of a clay court event.

Qualifier Arruabarrena Continues to Sparkle

Not often do you see scorelines like those associated with Arruabarrena in this competition. Having qualified for the main draw of the tournament with back to back double-bagels, Arruabarrena nearly managed a hat-trick when she dropped just one game in her demolition job of Jessica Plazas of Colombia.

Arruabarrena was on her way to the third win without losing a game as she led 6-0, 4-0, but Plazas finally found a way to sneak in a game. That was the only one she won though with Arruabarrena breaking Plazas for the sixth time to complete the rout.

The former world number 52 Arruabarrena would know this is where this run of routs will end. Part of the reason behind such results has been the luck of the draw which has seen her play against a 426th, 1148th and a 982nd-ranked player in succession. Now she takes on someone ranked near the top 100 and it would be interesting to see if Arruabarrena can up her game quickly enough to put up a fight.

Paolini v Arruabarrena Prediction and Tip

While Arruabarrena’s form is understandably tempting, it’s quite a different kettle of fish to feature against players ranked that low on the charts. Again Paolini one can expect a different quality and one that sees the Italian come through.

Tip: Paolini to win: 4/5 (bet365)
