Having crushed Tsvetana Pironkova in the first round of this competition, Gauff needed to overcome a first set loss to carve out a three-set win over Ludmilla Samsonova in the second round.
Making her Charleston Open debut this season, Gauff needed two hours to get past her Russian opponent, winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. In doing so, Gauff has now made it to pre-quarterfinal for the first time on clay in her career.
Samsonsova began strongly with a break in the very first game of the match and Gauff failed to get back into the set after that. And when Gauff dropped her serve yet again in the first game of the second set, it looked like the match could be headed for an early finish.
Gauff rebounded nicely with a break back in the very next game before winning the next five games to clinch the match-equalising set. A fluctuating final set first saw Samsonova take a 3-1 lead and then had Gauff moving ahead with two breaks of serves.
The Russian broke Gauff back to level things out at 4-4 but the world number 36 took control of the match after that with a hold and a break to complete the win. Up against her is the former world number 26.

Davis Stuns Sofia
2020 Australian Open winner and French Open winner Sofia Kenin hasn’t had the kind of start to the season she would have liked. But when the second seed came through in the first, it looked like Davis’ campaign was on its way to its end, having earlier come through against Madison Brengle in the opening round.
However, Davis, who had beaten only beaten two players in the Top 5 before this, notched up her second victory against Kenin when they came back to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-4.
A quarterfinalist at the 2015 Charleston Open, Davis attributed the win to being able to dig deep despite being a set down. In fact, Kenin was twice up a break in the second set too but both times Davis broke back and then again while up 4-3 to level the match.
And then in the final set, she showed wherewithal of a different kind – having broken Kenin twice, she lost the advantage when her opponent did the same to her. However, just when one thought the momentum had shifted hands, she broke Kenin yet again to come through in three.
Gauff v Davis Prediction and Tip
While Gauff is understandably a favourite at 3/10 to win this, we expect Davis to put up a strong showing again. Expect her to win a set here at the very least.
