Veronika Kudermetova v Kurumi Nara Head to Head

Their only previous outing came in the qualifiers of the 2019 Wuhan Open and Kudermetova had to huff and puff to a three-set win.

Kudermetova Goes Past Navarro

Two matches played, two matches won in straight sets and Kudermetova now has a chance to make it three wins in a row for the first time since making it to the final of the Abu Dhabi Open earlier this season. Since that first competition of the year on the WTA tour, the Russian has struggled to garner results, with her third round at the Australian Open being the best showing.

Here, she has had a fortunate draw, which also includes facing a player ranked 162nd in this upcoming third round match.

In her opener, Kudermetova was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over the unranked qualifier Desirae Krawczyk before registering a 6-4, 6-4 victory over American teenager Emma Navarro.

In an otherwise uneventful first set, Kudermetova saved a break-point in the very first game, and then broke her opponent in the second before serving out to clinch it. The topsy-turviness of the encounter came in the second set when the two players shared four breaks of serves over the first eight games.

At 4-4 it could have been anybody’s set but Kudermetova then broke Navarro off the third break-point of the game and then converted her fourth match-point to complete the win.

Nara Registers Another Straight-Set Win

Nara was once ranked 32nd in the world so the talent has always been there. It’s just that her recent form has tapered away and she has fallen off the charts in these times.

Still, as a qualifier, the Japanese player has now reached the third round on the back of some solid showing, winning all her four matches in this tournament (including the two qualifying round wins) in straight sets. Nara, whose only previous outing in this competition came in 2016 and saw her get bundled out in the first round, is yet to lose more than four games in a set in this competition so far.

After a 6-2, 6-2 win over Francesca Di Lorenzo in the first round of this competition, Nara brushed aside American 18-year-old Whitney Osuigwe 6-1, 6-4 to set up this meeting with Kudermetova.

The big question is if this kind of momentum can help her in any way to upset a player whose own current rank is close to Nara’s best-ever.

Kudermetova v Nara Prediction and Tip

While we think Kudermetova starts off a favourite, we think it could get a lot closer than the odds of 2/9 for her win suggest.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
