Veronika Kudermetova v Paula Badosa Head to Head

These two have played a couple of matches between each other and Kudermetova leads 2-0. Both matches had come on hard court surfaces, the first at the Indian Wells Open qualifiers of 2019 and then more recently in the Abu Dhabi Open at the start of the year.

This will be their first meeting on clay.

Kudermetova Shines in Sizzling Stephens Win

Sloane Stephens had shown a remarkable turnaround in form in this tournament following a poor previous season and an underwhelming start to this year. It looked like the Stephens of old was back.

Except that Kudermetova proved to be too strong for her American opponent despite the latter’s solid form.

Kudermetova, who had dropped just 14 games across six sets coming into this quarterfinal encounter, broke Stephens early to race to a 3-0 lead. Following an exchange of service breaks in the fifth and sixth games, she went on to hold comfortably and converted the second set-point she got on her own service game to close out the set.

Things became even easier in the second. The Russian broke twice to start the set, and while Stephens pulled one back in the fourth, she found it difficult to get past Kudermetova’s serve after that.

In the end, the world number 38 served it out to 15 in the 10th game of the second set to clinch the match. A second final of the season – and career – awaits Kudermetova at the end of this upcoming match.

Badosa Causes the Biggest Upset

Having never beaten a top-20 player in her career coming into her quarterfinal here in Charleston, Badosa was comfortably the second-favourite in her quarterfinal match against the world number Ash Barty. We did think, however, she could cause bit of a mayhem given the way Badosa had gone on clay this year, although admittedly did not consider the possibility of a straight-set Barty defeat.

That’s exactly how things panned out for the Spaniard as she registered a 6-4, 6-3 win over the world number one to make it to the semifinal.

What was remarkable about her performance was she faced 14 break-points in the entire match but was broken just twice, but in turn dismantled her opponent’s serve on five separate occasions – her seven aces aiding her any other serving woes.

Badosa will now need to regroup from this mental high very quickly and get down to the business again – a business consisting of making it to her first ever WTA final.

Kudermetova v Badosa Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be a ripper of a contest with Kudermetova expected to take this in three sets.

Tip: Kudermetova to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
