Jannik Sinner v Albert Ramos-Vinolas Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between Sinner and the 47th-ranked Vinolas-Ramos before this opening match in Monte-Carlo Masters.

Sinner Starts Off as Miami Runner-Up

Often tipped to be a talent to watch for in the future, it looks like that future has already arrived for Sinner. Just 19 years in age, the Italian has already won ATP titles in his career and more recently reached the final of the Miami Masters before losing to Hubert Hurkacz in the title-decider.

And while all his final appearances have come on hard court surfaces, Sinner has shown his capabilities on clay as well.

As recently as the 2020 French Open, Sinner surprised a few with wins over Federico Coria, David Goffin and Alexander Zverev to reach his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal.

In the end, it took a rampaging Rafael Nadal to stop Sinner but the marker had been laid – here’s a player who can make that transition between his favourite hard court surfaces and clay and wonderfully at that.

This Masters tournament in Monte-Carlo will be the first he features in on this surface since that Roland-Garros run and it would be interesting to see how far he goes here. Starts off with a tricky challenge though.

Ramos-Vinolas Could Make Life Difficult

As clay-court specialists go, Ramos-Vinolas would be one of the lowest-ranked, dangerous players on this surface. Especially this season in which he has played all but four of his matches on clay. And it’s not just been about playing 11 matches on that surface, Ramos-Vinolas has also had a few good results going his way.

Take for instance, the Cordoba Open in Argentina where he made it as far as the final. At that competition, Ramos-Vinolas overcame three Argentinian players, Juan Londero, Facundo Bagnis and most vitally Diego Schwartzman to finish runner-up.

At the Buenos Aires Open which followed soon after, he was a losing semifinalist and at the time of writing this preview, the Spaniard has already entered the semifinal of the Marbella Open with wins over Ricardas Berankis and Norbert Gombos and will be facing the top seed Pablo Carreno-Busta.

While Sinner’s pedigree is quite different from the kind of opponents he has been facing the fact that he has performed well on clay all his career but more in the lead-up to this tournament makes this a delicious contest.

Sinner v Ramos-Vinolas Prediction and Tip

Sinner is an obvious favourite at 2/5 but this match could have its own twists and turns and we can back the Ramos-Vinolas to make things difficult for the Italian.

Tip: Ramos-Vinolas to win a set – Yes: 8/11 (bet365)
