Alex De Minaur v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

While they have never faced off at the highest level, these two have been involved in two previous matches – Fokina won their match on the Challenger circuit on clay while De Minaur clinched their Next Gen Final tie in 2019.

De Minaur

Australia’s Alex de Minaur began his season at the Antalya Open where he defeated Malek Jaziri, Adrian Andreev, Nikoloz Basilashvilli and David Goffin to reach his eighth career final, which was cut short after his opponent Alexander Bublik retired after just two games in the match to hand the Aussie his fourth career title.

De Mianur, who has won all his titles on outdoor hard courts, lost both his matches at this year’s ATP Cup, before matching his best performance at the Australian Open, reaching the third round of the tournament for the second time in his career.

The number one Aussie player in the world today next featured in Rotterdam, beating compatriot John Millman in the first round but falling to Kei Nishikori in the Round of 16. The defeat was followed by a Round-of-32 exit from Dubai, where he was beaten by Jeremy Chardy after having received a bye in the first round.

Another opening loss to Daniel Galan followed in Miami and the Aussie’s season which began with a title has suddenly gone off track a little. While he is not the most comfortable on clay, he will hoping to further his ability to grind and make the most his strong baseline game as he gets this swing of the season off to a start.

Fokina

The 21-year-old Spaniard, who suffered an injury during his first match of the year at a challenger event in France, withdrew from the Australian Open, but came back later to reach the last eight in Montpellier, his first ATP event this year.

Starting with a three-set win over Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the first round in Montpellier, Davidovich Fokina ousted fourth seed Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets, but went down fighting to the big-serving Egor Gerasimov in the Round of 16.

The young Spaniard competed in his second ATP event of the year in Rotterdam, knocking out compatriot and fifth seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the Round of 32, before falling to Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in the next round.

Early losses at Dubai, Miami and on the Marbella clay followed and the skilled Fokina will be hoping that the Monte Carlo clay turns this swing and his season back onto the right track.

Young Davidovich Fokina has shown good form since the tour resumed after the pandemic hiatus last year, reaching the fourth round of the U.S. Open, semifinals in Cologne-1 and quarterfinals in Cologne-2, before ending the year with a run to the Round of 16 at the Paris Masters.

De Minaur v Fokina Prediction and Tip

An exciting clash between to you and upcoming players, here at Monte Carlo. While De Minaur may be the more accomplished, Fokina is definitely more suited to the clay. A close match is likely, with Fokina prevailing in a tight third set.

Tip: Fokiba to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
