Clara Tauson v Ludmilla Samsonova Head to Head
No previous matches have been played between the 102nd-ranked Tauson and Russia’s Samsonova, who is currently 110th in the world.

She was in the early days of playing at the highest level last season but the Danish player Tauson came up with a solid 2020 season on clay for a player ranked outside the top 200.
It started off with a title win on the ITF circuit where she clinched her first – and only so far – title on clay, and followed it up with a fourth round appearance at the Prague Open.
Still needing to go through the qualifiers at the French Open, Tauson came through to make the main draw where she shocked Jennifer Brady in the opener at Roland-Garros before falling to Danielle Collins in the second.
Tauson has exploded this season with some excellent performances leading up to her showing at the Lyon Open. She won an ITF title in Germany but not too many would have expected her to go the distance as a qualifier at the Lyon Open. Wins over Ekaterina Alexandrova, Camila Giorgi and Paula Badosa only added to that maiden WTA title.
Having lost her only match on clay this season which came at the Bogota Open earlier this year, it remains to be seen if she can start off this competition on a more solid note.

Samsonova Itching to Break Top 100
Ranked 110th in the world, Samsonova is currently at her best-ever ranking and another couple of solid showings could help her break into the top 100. She starts off her campaign against a player who has only recently broken into the top 100 too.
Samsonova began the year by qualifying for the Australian Open and that was the venue of her only main draw win over the next four tournaments. At the year’s opening Grand Slam, Samsonova made it to the second round with a hard-fought victory over Paula Badosa before falling to Garbine Muguruza.
The Russian then turned up her best ever performance in a while, registering back to back wins to qualify for the Miami Open main draw before surprising Camila Giorgi and Kiki Bertens in the first two rounds.
In her only clay court appearance at the Charleston Open last week, Samsonova won her opener and then lost to Cori Gauff in the second round. Can she now make it another victory here?

Tauson is 8/11 to win this while Samonsova starts off at 11/10 but there’s hardly anything to choose between these two. We will have to go with a hard-fought match which goes into the third set.
