Lucas Pouille v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

Pouille and Popyrin have met only once before on the ATP tour and what a match it turned out to be at the 2019 Australian Open.

Frenchman Pouille, who is known for beating the big guns of the sport, came across a supremely talented Popyrin on that day as the then 19-year-old stretched him to five sets.

Indeed, it was a blockbuster encounter between the two players, before Pouille ended Popyrin’s fight back in the decider, eventually winning the match 7-6, 6-3, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3 in three hours and 43 minutes.

Popyrin Overcomes Andujar in Opener

Popyrin’s campaign at the Monte Carlo Masters could have ended in the first round on Tuesday after his Spanish opponent Pablo Andujar handed him a bagel in the opening set. In fact, Popyrin felt humiliated and looked absolutely clueless when he was unable to stop a barrage of Andujar’s heavy ground-strokes from the baseline.

Surprisingly, though, Andujar’s level dropped in the second set and it allowed the Australian to make his way into the contest. Once the 21-year-old Popyrin succeeded in finding his range, he gained in confidence and then it was no looking back.

While Popyrin continued to grow in confidence, Andujar’s game completely broke down. Ultimately the World No. 83 Popyrin won the second set 6-2 to level the match at a set apiece.

Unlike the first and the second sets, both players began exceptionally well in the third as the set remained on an even keel for a long time. Ultimately, a tiebreaker ensued to decide the fate of the contest and it was Popyrin, who came out victorious in the end as he was able to unleash his booming serves and win a few easy points that were quite necessary to win the match.

Pouille Knocks Out Pella in the First Round

Pouille, who has struggled to find his best form of late, was firing on all cylinders against Guido Pella of Argentina in the first round. In fact, at times the Frenchman looked imperious and if does play the kind of tennis that he displayed against Pella, then he will surely be able to cause an upset or two in the tournament.

The Frenchman was successful in stamping his authority from the outset as he kept on finding his range with his main weapon, which is the serve.

Moreover, his ferocious forehand was helping him to dominate his rival in the short rallies as Pella was unable to match the pace and power, the Frenchman was generating on his ground-strokes.

In the end, Pouille won the match 6-3, 6-4 with relative ease and would have gained the much-needed confidence before his match with Popyrin. Frankly speaking, there’s no doubt about Pouille’s ability as he has beaten the likes of Juan Martin Del Porto during the course of his career.

But, his career has been going downhill in recent days and the only way to resurrect it is by winning a few matches in succession.

Can he win consecutive matches for the first time in 2021?

Pouille v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Considering Popyrin’s form and his extremely impressive win/loss record, which stands at 14-4 this season, he will head into this match as an out and out favourite. Expect him to win in three sets if not in two.

Tip: Pouille to win a set – Yes: 4/9 (bet365)
