Fokina Sends Berrettini Packing

At the start of Fokina’s second round match against Matteo Berrettini, bookmakers were confused over the favourite and we had reckoned the Spaniard would be able to test the world number 10 despite being ranked 58th. It turned out to be more than just a mere test in the end.

Fokina came away a straight-set winner, adding to his opening round victory over Alex De Minaur, sealing his third round berth in an hour and 32 minutes.

It started with a break of serve in the second game of the opening set for Fokina and while Berrettini came back to level it out at 4-4, he then frittered away three game points to get broken and lose the set.

High on confidence, Fokina then built strongly towards the sixth game where he had four break-points opportunities and finally converted to take a 4-2 lead. Saving two break-points of his own, Fokina then served for the match in the ninth game of the set to close out the encounter.

Pouille, the Biggest Surprise for Round Three

Pouille isn’t quite a clay court specialist, nor has he had a great record on this surface this year before this match. And yet, here we are, one of surprises of this year’s Monte-Carlo Masters is the 86th-ranked Frenchman who has defeated Guido Pella and Alexei Popyrin to make it to the third round.

While the Pella win was a straight-set affair, Pouille needed three sets to get past Popyrin. The match lasted a shade over two hours with both players earning an equal, four breaks of serves but Pouille doing that at more crucial times.

While Pouille did not get too many of his first serves in (44%), he won 74% of those points, but more importantly benefitted from his opponent’s inability to break his second serve down.

The Frenchman won 54% of his second serves, which compared quite favourably to the 40% points Popyrin won.

Now comes the real test for Pouille. While Fokina himself isn’t very high-ranked, form points to an easy win for him. Can Pouille stun his opponent here to continue his giant-killing march into the quarterfinal for the second time in his career at the Monte-Carlo Masters?

Fokina v Pouille Prediction and Tip

Fokina is 3/10 to win this, and while we expect a fighting display from Pouille, the question is whether he can push his opponent into a third set. We think not.

Tip: Fokina to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
